Overview
What can a century-old American brand, built on heavy V-twins and chrome loops, possibly do with a punchy 125-horsepower flat tracker? The answer is called the Indian FTR 1200 Rally, and it upends quite a few preconceptions. Born from a direct lineage with the competition Scout FTR 750, this Rally version pushes the needle toward adventure. Or at least, it cultivates the image with enough conviction that you almost believe it.

The 60° V-twin displacing 1203 cc delivers 125 hp at 7750 rpm and, more importantly, 117.7 Nm of torque from just 6000 rpm. This engine revs high for an American twin, breathing through four valves per cylinder with a 12.5:1 compression ratio that leaves no doubt about its sporting ambitions. On paper, it plays in the same league as the Ducati Monster and Triumph Speed Triple, but with a radically different personality. Throttle response, reworked since the 2022 model year, gains in precision. The rear cylinder deactivation system at idle, inherited from recent updates, provides welcome heat relief in urban riding. For the 2023 model year, Indian also revised the clutch and fitted a new sport exhaust that unleashes the V-twin's raspy voice.
Scrambler? Not really. The 2023 FTR 1200 Rally borrows the genre's styling cues without fully committing to off-road duty. The spoked wheels wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires make a visual statement, and these dual-purpose rubbers handle dry tracks or hard-packed trails respectably enough. But at 242 kg wet, with a tank limited to 13 liters and tire dimensions of 120/70-19 and 150/70-18, this remains a machine designed for tarmac that agrees to get its wheels dirty now and then. The ProTaper handlebar, raised by 50 mm, and the 815 mm seat height offer an upright position, comfortable for long-distance riding. Wind protection amounts to a compact flyscreen. That's the bare minimum, consistent with the bike's stated temperament.
The tubular steel trellis frame houses a 43 mm inverted fork and a single rear shock, both offering 150 mm of travel. Adequate for road-tripping, just enough for dirt roads. The Brembo braking setup, with twin 320 mm front discs clamped by four-piston radial calipers, inspires confidence. Indian claims to have firmed up lever feel for 2023, without detailing the recipe. On the other hand, the addition of an inertial measurement unit is a game-changer on the safety front: traction control and ABS now become lean-angle sensitive. Three riding modes—Sport, Standard, and Rain—allow you to tailor the character. Instrumentation upgrades to a 10 cm round TFT touchscreen with the RideCommand system, integrating Bluetooth, GPS navigation, and smartphone pairing. A test ride on the Indian FTR 1200 Rally reveals a connected, modern machine, far from the clichés one might pin on the brand.

At €17,190, the Indian FTR 1200 Rally's price positions it against the Ducati Desert X or the Triumph Tiger Sport 660, depending on whether you see it as a style-focused scrambler or an adventurous roadster. It won't be either one perfectly, and that's precisely what gives it its charm. The specs speak for themselves: this torque-rich V-twin will appeal to riders who want character without the heft of a bagger. For gravel roads along lakeshores, it'll get the job done. For rough single tracks, you'd better look elsewhere. The Indian FTR 1200 Rally remains first and foremost a machine built on style and sensation, cut for those who want to ride American without giving up sportiness.
