Overview
So, you’re paying for a brawler’s look for the price of a friendly custom? The 2012 Honda VT 750 Shadow C2B Black Spirit, or its 2013 equivalent if you’re looking for a used model, clearly plays on this register. In a world where dark custom is the law, Honda has simply painted everything black, from the 14.6-liter fuel tank to the spoked wheels, including the dual-cradle frame. Only the exhaust pipes and mirrors dare to shine. It’s effective, eye-catching, and it works. The riding position is redesigned with a drag-bar handlebar, and the 650 mm seat installs you lower than the rear tire, a 160-section pachyderm. For showing off, it’s perfect. For the wallet, it’s already more questionable, with a new price that exceeded 8600 euros, a serious premium compared to a classic Shadow S.

But don’t be fooled, beneath this bad boy makeover lies the peaceful heart of a well-bred Japanese custom. The 745 cm3 V-twin engine, with its 46 horsepower and 64.7 Nm of torque available from 3500 rpm, was never intended to rip your arms off. It purrs, pulls without stress, and will take you to a top speed of approximately 160 km/h without ever scaring you. The 5-speed gearbox and shaft drive are there for simplicity and minimal maintenance. It’s the antithesis of a demanding motorcycle. You cruise, you let yourself be carried by the torque, and you appreciate the ease. The target audience is clear: the novice customizer or the relaxed touring rider who wants a strong look without the mechanical hassles or nervousness of a more sporty machine.
However, when you scratch the black paint, some technical choices are jarring. The braking system, with its single 296 mm disc at the front and its… 180 mm drum at the rear, smells of the 1980s. It’s consistent with the retro style, but totally undersized, even for such modest performance. The 41 mm fork creates an illusion with its large fork covers, but the suspension remains basic. And this weight of 251 kg when fully fueled, you feel it in reverse or in tight roundabouts. Next to it, a more recent Yamaha XVS 950 offers more character and bite for an equivalent budget, even used.
Ultimately, this Honda VT 750 Shadow Black Spirit is a double-edged sword. It will appeal to those who want a dark custom with a radical look and indestructible mechanics, prioritizing attitude over thrills. For a used purchase today, it’s a reliable and economical chassis. But the motorcyclist seeking emotion or modernity will pass by, disappointed by the archaic braking and the placid engine. It’s not a bad motorcycle, it’s simply very honest: it promises a style and delivers it, without technical flourishes. A motorized fashion accessory, no more, no less.
