Overview
Do you remember the Shadow? It had somewhat disappeared from view, this Japanese bike that cast a shadow over the Harleys in the affordable custom segment. Two years of silence, and here it returns in 2009 under the name Honda VT 750 DC Shadow Spirit. Not a revolution, but a calculated refresh. Honda took a look at its larger VTX models to redesign the silhouette, with a more taut line, a faired headlight, and those rims that give it a less timid look. It’s aesthetic work, but it works.

The heart remains the 52° V-twin, faithful and robust. They reworked the engine to give it more character at low speeds, and the figures prove it: 63.7 Nm of torque available from 3000 rpm. The power, 46 horsepower, is not crazy, but that’s the point. It pulls like a tractor as soon as you lift your foot, perfect for quiet starts or long runs in the city. Compared to a Suzuki Intruder of the same size, it is less nervous, but more rounded, more easy to live with. The shaft drive is a pleasant surprise on a machine at this price, it removes a maintenance chore and adds a touch of mechanical nobility.
But let's frankly talk about what makes a custom. The weight, 248 kg fully fueled, is within the standard, but it feels light from the first maneuver thanks to a 650 mm seat. You put your feet down effortlessly, even with boots. It’s a machine for those starting out in the cruiser world, or for the traveler who wants comfort without complication. The 14-liter tank is a weak point, you will often see the pump with such modest autonomy. And this drum rear brake, on a new motorcycle in 2009, feels a bit retro, even in a category where authenticity is often an argument.
So, where does this Honda VT 750 DC Shadow Spirit stand? At €8390, it plays in the court of accessible Japanese customs, facing the Kawasaki Vulcan or the Yamaha V-Star. It doesn’t have the brutality of a Harley Sportster, nor the exuberant style of an Indian. It offers an honest formula: a reliable engine that rumbles without breaking, an ergonomics that doesn’t tire, and an updated look. It’s the motorcycle for those who want an American without the American hassles, for Sunday rides or urban commutes with a touch of personality. It doesn’t seek to be the fastest, with a top speed announced at 160 km/h, it just wants to be the most enjoyable to ride day after day.
