Overview
Can a motorcycle be both sensible and spirited? The question arises when you unleash the 2010 Honda VT 750 DC Shadow Spirit. After a two-year hiatus, the Shadow returns with a clear ambition: to seduce the neo-customizer seeking the essence of the American cruiser, but with the legendary reliability of the brand with the wing. And it must be said that the brushstroke is successful. The silhouette has become more substantial, borrowing muscle without complexly from the larger VTX models, with this more fleshy teardrop-shaped tank and a black-accented fork. The overall design exudes a much more assertive road presence than previous generations, without falling into parody.

Beneath this bad boy disguise lies a boy scout’s heart. The 52° V-twin engine, with a displacement of 745 cm3, is far from explosive. With 46 horsepower at 5500 rpm, we are far from explosive performance. But that’s not the point. The trick, and this is where Honda excels, lies in its early torque. The 63.7 Nm available from 3000 rpm means one thing: you can forget the five-speed gearbox in provincial curves. You downshift once at startup, and then the engine pulls, supple and regular, without jolts or parasitic vibrations. It is disconcertingly easy, almost too much for the rider seeking raw sensations. The shaft drive, rare for this displacement, adds to this impression of mechanical refinement and serenity in use, without chain maintenance to manage.
This philosophy of carefree riding is confirmed on the handlebars. With a seat 65 cm from the ground, the Shadow Spirit is a motorcycle of absolute accessibility. The announced weight of 248 kg fully fueled is forgotten once underway, thanks to a very low center of gravity. In the city or on winding roads, it is driven with a reassuring nonchalance. But this docility has a dynamic price. The 41 mm telescopic fork and the two lateral shock absorbers are designed for comfort, not for sport. As soon as the pace accelerates, the motorcycle pitches and lacks road holding. The braking, with its single disc at the front and its drum at the rear, is just sufficient, but lacks bite and progressiveness when you need to brake sharply. Faced with a Yamaha XVS 650 DragStar or a Suzuki Intruder, it plays the card of mechanical sophistication, but loses bite and sonic personality.
So, who is this machine for? Clearly for the novice rider or the veteran seeking a first custom without surprises. For those who want the cruiser style, the relaxed position, and the look of passersby, without the chronic flaws of the American bikes. The price of 7790 euros at the time positioned it as a premium option in the segment, justified by this shaft drive and impeccable finish. The Honda VT 750 DC Shadow Spirit is the anti-rebel par excellence. It offers all the panache of a custom with the docility of a sewing machine. An unbeatable recipe for conquering a wide audience, but which will leave the purist seeking mechanical thrills and soul indifferent. It is a motorcycle that does its job well, perhaps too well, to the point of becoming almost anonymous once the style effect has passed.
