Overview
They called it the queen of compromises, the one who could do everything without ever shouting. The 2000 Honda VFR 800, heir to the RC lineage, is not a motorcycle that stands out with aggressive curves. Its styling is restrained, almost bourgeois, and yet, beneath this serious touring suit beats the heart of a V4 derived from the RC45 racing machines. A 781 cm3 engine fed by PGM-FI injection, which delivers 106 horsepower at 10,500 rpm and a torque of 78.5 Nm higher in the rev range. This is its first characteristic: below 6000 rpm, it lacks a bit of punch, you have to urge it on. But once the tachometer is awakened, the engine transforms, delivering a lively and linear force, a unique mechanical song thanks to its gear cascade distribution.

The aluminum twin-spar frame and the legendary Pro-Arm single-sided swingarm form the basis of a chassis of absolute precision. With a weight of 237 kg fully fueled, it is not a featherweight, but its balance is so natural that it seems to lose kilos while riding. The 41 mm fork and the mono-shock offer supple but tenacious adjustment, capable of swallowing road imperfections as well as holding a firm line in a tight sequence. The brakes, with their 296 mm front discs and the famous Dual-CBS which couples the front and rear, are of formidable efficiency. One might regret the absence of ABS, but the Honda system is so well-balanced that it inspires total confidence.
Who is she for? The demanding globetrotter who travels hundreds of kilometers without a grimace, but also the Sunday rider who likes to feel the machine come alive in the curves. The 805 mm seat is accessible, the slightly forward position remains manageable over long distances, and the fairing protects smoothly. With its 21-liter tank and an indestructible engine, it is an ideal travel companion, equally comfortable in dense city environments as on mountain roads. It swallows trips with a passenger without a murmur and can even have fun on the track, so predictable and reassuring its behavior is.
At more than 11,000 euros new, it was clearly positioned in the high-end segment. But this price was justified by complete equipment, impeccable finish and an exceptional resale value which, even today, testifies to its solidity in all conditions. Faced with competitors such as the Yamaha YZF 1000 R Thunderace or certain BMW F800s of the time, the VFR 800 did not seek a brawl in pure performance. It offered something more valuable: intelligent versatility, mechanical elegance and the serenity of knowing that, whatever the program, it would be perfect. It wasn't the most radical, but certainly one of the most accomplished. A motorcycle that doesn't age, simply.
