Overview

So, are we jumping into the big cubes? Not so fast. The 2002 Honda Shadow 125 is a bit of a stroke of genius and a scam of the century, all wrapped up in a custom frame that shows off more than it should. At a time when an A1 license often condemned riders to scooters or bland machines, Honda dared to fit a real V-twin engine into a steel cradle and offer a cruiser silhouette worthy of a 750. The result is unique on the used market, a Honda Shadow 125 that turns heads, but requires some compromises.

Honda Shadow 125

Under the 14.5-liter tank, the engine displays figures that don’t lie: 15 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, which is sporty for a 125, but the 10.5 Nm of torque arrives high in the rev range. You have to make this V2 sing to get anything out of it. The announced top speed of 120 km/h is an ideal, often attainable under perfect conditions, but you have to be patient. For those who dream of increasing the power of the Honda Shadow 125, know that the original Honda Shadow 125 carburetor and exhaust are very restricted, but the mechanical base is sound. It’s a well-known playground for personalization, from a simple bobber kit to a complete transformation.

But here’s where the problem lies, and that’s where the initial enthusiasm fades. At the new price of the time, and still today on the used market where a used Honda Shadow 125 on Leboncoin can be negotiated around €2000, the finishes are painful to look at. Too much plastic, not enough chrome, a cheap feel that contrasts with the machine’s presence. The fully fueled weight of 162 kg, combined with narrow tires (110 at the front, 130 at the rear), can make braking a bit sticky. And forget the center stand, its absence is a real pain in the city.

So, for whom? Clearly not for the budding track rider. This motorcycle is a fabulous school of style for the aspiring customizer, or an urban mount full of character for those who prioritize aesthetics over pure performance. Compared to modern Chinese cruisers, it has a soul and a noble mechanism. But you have to accept its limits, its flaws, and perhaps see in it a base rather than a finished product. This is the charm and frustration of this A1 icon, a fake big bike that taught a generation the dream, despite its little lies.
