Overview

Who said a 125cc custom couldn’t have attitude? In 2001, the Honda Shadow 125 threw a stone into the pond of small displacement motorcycles with a bold proposition: to offer the aesthetic codes of a large displacement machine, but with an A1 license in your pocket. The result is a machine that displays an imposing stature, with a weight announced at 162 kg fully fueled, and a silhouette that deceives appearances. For many, this approach was the only viable way to create a true 125cc custom, and it seduced generations of neo-bikers wanting style without waiting.

Honda Shadow 125

Behind this big American look hides an engine that requires patience. The 124.7 cm3 L-twin delivers 15 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, a power that requires careful work of the five-speed gearbox to stand out. On paper, the maximum speed of 120 km/h is achievable, but you often have to rely on a slight slope or a tailwind. This is where some will seek to increase the power of their Honda Shadow 125, via a free exhaust or carburetor adjustment, but the gains remain marginal on such a tame engine. On the other hand, this engine is legendary for its robustness, a significant argument when looking for a used Honda Shadow 125.

The riding experience reserves surprises. Despite its 146 kg dry weight and a low seat height of 680 mm, the Shadow is surprisingly agile in the city, forgiving the mistakes of a beginner. The double cradle frame and 35 mm fork offer reassuring stability. However, not everything is perfect. The mixed disc-drum braking system shows its limits with such a weight, and the original tires seem a little tight for a machine as planted as this. Another drawback for a custom: the finishes. Too much plastic is found where chrome was hoped for, a choice that weighs on the perception of quality, especially at the original new price.

Today, the used market is the kingdom of this Shadow. Between a used Honda Shadow 125 on Le Bon Coin for 2500 euros and announcements for a bobber version or one to be customized, it offers an accessible entry into the world of customs. Its large 14.5-liter tank and reliable mechanics make it an economical touring bike, even if the absence of a fuel gauge is an absurdity. It is a motorcycle with a double face: it offers the attitude and style of a large one, with the constraints and frugality of a small one. For a young license holder or an urban rider wanting to enjoy themselves without breaking the bank, it remains a credible option, provided you accept its placid character. A solid base, but which requires a little love and added chrome to really shine.
