Overview

One often seeks this little Japanese motorcycle, with its big-bike look, on classified ad sites or in specialized listings. The Honda Shadow 125, especially in its used versions, is a bit of an oddity in the French 125 landscape. With its 90-degree V-twin engine that rumbles like a three times larger engine, it promises exceptional custom sensations for an A1 license. But at 4500 euros new at the time, the entry ticket was already expensive, a sum that is now negotiated on the used market for a 2003 machine.

Honda Shadow 125

Let's be honest, getting on this bike instantly makes you forget you're riding a 125. The double cradle frame, the generous 14.5-liter fuel tank, and the low 68 cm seat create the silhouette of a true little cruiser. The weight quickly reminds you of reality: 162 kg fully fueled, it's a significant mass to manage when stopped, especially compared to a lighter 125 sportbike. The power of 15 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and the torque of 10.8 Nm require you to play with the 5-speed gearbox to get your little engine going, the displayed top speed of 120 km/h being an ideal that must be earned on the flat.

But that's where the trouble lies, and quite a bit at that. For a price that approached the price of a used 500, the Shadow 125’s finish was marred by an excess of plastic and faux leather. The promise of a chrome custom turned out to be short-lived. The absence of a fuel gauge on this large tank is a puzzle, and braking this mass with a single 240 mm disc at the front and a drum at the rear requires anticipation. The braking, coupled with somewhat tight original tires, can become a subject of meditation in an emergency. And beware of parking in town: the single side stand transforms the search for a flat parking space into a yoga exercise.

Yet, despite these flaws that push many to want to customize their Honda Shadow 125, changing the exhaust or tinkering with the carburetor, it remains a unique machine. It is not for the beginner looking for absolute economy, but for those who, from the A1 license, want the style, the look, and the sensation of a real reciprocating engine. It is a moody motorcycle, of simple pleasure, which offers relaxed riding and a crazy presence on the road. Finding a new Honda Shadow 125 today is a mission impossible, but finding the right used one is offering yourself a piece of personality in a world of sanitized 125s. A bold bet, but so enjoyable when you like to get off the beaten path.
