Overview
The little "monkey" of Honda hasn't stolen its name. A real little devil, agile, fun, weaving everywhere, as tall as three apples and flanked by a permanent good mood. A feeling set to continue thanks to a series of small modifications to remain on the market. The Monkey receives an OBD2-2 port, revises its ignition and retouches its injection to comply with Euro5+.
It continues its adventure smiling at everyone. The kind of bike you want to pack in your backpack to use anywhere spontaneously.
Speaking of which, in 1970, 10 years after its creation, the Monkey was equipped with a removable fork to fit in the car trunk. 40 years later, it has lost nothing of its "fun touch." However, it was tired of its engine. So, naturally, it will tease its friend the 125 Grom to borrow its more modern engine. It gains more than it thought.
Its engine shows a longer stroke than before. This generally translates to better torque. It won't be glaring given the small difference in power. OK, the 125 Monkey isn't a bulldog with its 9.4 horsepower and 11 Nm. Except that it's not the most important thing for a bike sniffing surfboards and paddock alleys.
The arrival of this engine allows the Monkey to gain a 5th gear. This will relieve the piston a little when venturing onto more open roads. For the record, it only had 3 speeds in its early days. The fourth arrived after the turn of the new century.
Honda is known for its seriousness. While the Monkey is the ultimate fun machine. Look at this: the wheels are only 12 inches, it weighs just 104 kilos (3 less than before), there's chrome everywhere, you could almost pass it under a table, the seat is as thick as a panettone and is almost twice the size of the tank. How much gasoline can you put in it? 5.6 liters, no more. Just a third of the capacity on board most motorcycles. But since the engine claims to consume only a liter and a half per 100 km, thirst won't arrive before 300 kilometers.
The Monkey 125 retains the essential elements of its chassis (steel single-tube frame, inverted fork, 220 mm and 190 mm disc brakes, a minimum wheelbase of 1145 mm, which is 10 less than before) with the bonus since 2021 of new progressive shock absorbers and a slight increase in ground clearance (175 mm versus 160 mm). On the electronics side, there is a digital instrument panel, PGM-FI injection, LED lighting, an ABS supervised by an IMU inertial unit - with rear wheel lift control - and a headlight flashing function activated by the ignition key; handy for finding the bike in a parking lot.
