Overview

The CB 125 R underwent what was necessary in 2024 to maintain its career: new color schemes, Euro5+ compliance, and the introduction of a color TFT screen. This 5-inch display, found on many Honda models, features a simplified but not sparse interface with 4 display choices for the speedometer and tachometer. It is controlled via the new left-hand multi-function switch.

This motorcycle is a miniature CB 1000 R. The same type, the same presence, adapted to the build of young riders. The little bruiser had grown tired of its engine borrowed from the CBR 125 R. Since 2021, it has its own, more modern engine, to have a more convincing power output. It really needs it. The competition is far from weak.

This engine has twice as many components in its cylinder head compared to the 2018-2020 version: 4 valves and 2 ACT, for improved breathing. Its internal dimensions are less square (57.3 x 48.4 mm instead of 58 x 47.2 mm), its compression ratio is higher, and the airbox and resonator have been redesigned. The result is that the CB 125 R II engine is 1.6 horsepower more powerful for a maximum of 15 horsepower (within a fraction of a ring). Torque is also improved, the additional 1.2 Nm allowing a total of 11.6 at 8000 rpm. With this more powerful engine, the CB is better equipped in a category where the offering has noticeably densified in recent years. Kawasaki and Suzuki have also returned after years of absence.

Its design clearly sets it apart from the trend, and the Honda can now nurture curiosity with its pedigree. Weighing in at less than 130 kilograms when fully fueled, it is one of the lightest 125s on the market. A Katoche or a Yam weighs 5 kilograms more. On the chassis side, the little CB puts forward certain arguments. Its inverted fork is a Showa SFF-BP 41 mm, with large internal pistons and separate functions – a technology that arrived on sportbikes about 10 years ago. More effective and offering more feel, this is the first time this model has been installed on a 125.

Apart from its fork, the CB 125 R does not change any component of its chassis. Composed of tubes and stamped steel elements for the frame and swingarm, it performs its job with satisfaction and action. To tame the velocity, we find the radial 4-piston brake caliper around a 296 mm disc. The rear one measures 220 mm and has a single piston. Braking is reinforced by ABS, itself associated with an IMU inertial sensor. Its job will be to fine-tune the braking distribution between the front and rear. It’s a shame that the new colors eliminate the gold-bronze finish on the fork stanchions, wheels, and engine casings.

Beneath this facade that is neither neo nor retro but a bit of both, the bike benefits from technological integrations that will make an impact. The new TFT instrument panel and a bulbous headlight enriched with rows of LEDs. Frugal, the roadster announces it will be content with just over 2 liters to cover 100 kilometers. With 10 liters in its belly, a full tank should take you well over 400 km (according to the figures communicated). Reality will be a little less long. But the autonomy will still be excellent.

Honda maintains its little feisty roadster in the 125 clan. The CBF lacks the necessary grit; the CB 125 R is there to stand its ground. The fight continues, each manufacturer has its slingshot.
