Overview
It’s easy to overlook it, but beneath its urban adventurer appearance, the Sportster draws its roots from the dirt tracks of American ovals. The 2011 R version, with its flat handlebar and striking orange and black graphics, offers a more pronounced nod to this dirt-track heritage. For the rest, it’s pure Sportster, with all that implies in terms of assumed contradictions.

The engine is the venerable 883 cm3 Evolution V-twin. It delivers modest power, barely 53 horsepower, but it’s its torque of 67.7 Nm, available from low RPM, that writes the script. Here, you don’t rev the engine; you simply ride this wave of low-end grunt. The sound, deep and hammering, is an integral part of the sensory package. It’s a mechanical experience to be savored more than rushed, perfect for leisurely rides where the scenery is as important as the road.
The riding position, dictated by the wide handlebar and a 76 cm high seat, is relaxed, almost nonchalant. The twin-cradle frame and 39 mm fork offer reassuring stability, but the rather basic suspension quickly reveals its limits as soon as the asphalt becomes winding. The dual front disc braking system is honest for the bike's size, but doesn't seek pure performance. It’s a motorcycle designed for style and relaxation, not for attacking mountain passes at pace.
Who is it for? The novice seduced by the Harley myth, who will find here an accessible and easy-to-handle machine. To the urban traveler for whom the journey is a parenthesis in its own right. But certainly not the track rider seeking thrills. At nearly 8500 euros new, it played in the same league as Japanese roadsters that were much more agile and performant. But the choice has never been rational with a Sportster. You buy it for its character, for that unique feeling of riding a piece of America, even if it comes at the cost of compromises on pure dynamics. It’s an object of emotion, imperfect and endearing, that reminds you that the pleasure of motorcycling is not measured only by the stopwatch.
