Overview
What is the essence of a Harley? For some, it’s a large engine that shakes shop windows. For others, it’s primarily a posture, an attitude at low speed. The 2006 Sportster 883 Low resolutely leans towards this second category. With its low seat just 66 cm from the tarmac, it’s aimed at those who want the symbol without the gymnastics. You place both feet flat on the ground, easily, and that’s the promise of this lowered custom.

Beneath your seat, the 883 cm3 Evolution V2 rumbles with that characteristic sound, but don’t expect electrifying performance. With 53 horsepower and a torque of 69 Nm, it’s far from excessive. The 260 kg machine moves forward with an assumed nonchalance, preferring atmosphere to brisk acceleration. The five-speed gearbox is precise, the belt drive silent, but the engine vibrates joyfully as soon as you twist the grips a little. It’s an engine to be savored, not hurried.
And that’s where the problem lies if you’re looking for something else. The Low version sacrificed suspension travel for increased accessibility. The 117 mm forks and the 61 mm rear travel transform every pothole into an event. The thin, scooped solo seat doesn’t help on long distances. This Harley is a chic city bike, a machine for showing off in town or for short Sunday rides. It will appeal to the beginner seeking an image or the experienced traveler who wants a relaxed second motorcycle.
Facing the competition, let’s say it, it doesn’t play in the same league. A Honda Shadow 750 or a Yamaha V-Star 650 will offer more comfort and versatility for less money. But they will never have that certain something, that aura that turns heads. At over 8000 euros new, you’re clearly paying for the badge and the experience. It’s a choice of the heart, not of reason. A choice for those who want to enter the Harley family without breaking their backs, even if it means making some concessions on comfort and practicality. A passenger? Forget it, unless you dive into the accessories catalog, as thick as a directory.
