Overview
Does a 7.9-liter tank and vintage blue suffice to transform a Sportster into a collector's item? The 2018 Harley-Davidson XL 1200 X Forty-Eight "115th Anniversary" Edition poses this question with its retro look and a price that flirts with 13,600 euros. Beneath its commemorative attire, it is first and foremost a classic Sportster, powered by the same 1202 cm3 V-twin that delivers 67 horsepower and 96 Nm of torque from 3500 rpm. These figures are not the machine's strong point; they are its identity: a pulling propulsion, generous in the low revs, which vibrates the steel frame and resonates the landscape. On the road, the maximum speed is around 170 km/h, but the essence lies elsewhere, in this feeling of raw power and mechanical simplicity.

Compared to a Yamaha MT-07 or even a Honda CB650R, the Forty-Eight seems frozen in another era. Its single disc braking system, 49 mm fork, and basic shock absorbers are not intended to seduce track riders. A wet weight of 252 kg and a seat height of 710 mm rather destine it to style enthusiasts, those seeking a compact and aggressive silhouette, with these balloon tires 16 inches that anchor the motorcycle in a 1950s aesthetic. Belt drive is a tranquility asset, but the five-speed gearbox remains a bit rustic. It is a machine that demands indulgence, or better, passion.
The real argument for this limited edition of 2400 units is its trim. The "Legend Blue Denim" on the peanut tank, the giant eagle and Bar & Shield logo, the azure stitching on the seat, the anniversary badge on the crankshaft cover: everything is designed to celebrate the 115 years of the brand. Harley-Davidson knows that its customers also buy a piece of legend. For 1000 euros more than the standard version, you get an engraved serial number and the assurance of riding a rare model. It is a sentimental investment, almost an act of faith.
This special Sportster will not convince a touring rider seeking autonomy, with its tank that imposes frequent stops. It will not seduce a beginner either, because its behavior is too specific, too rooted in Harley culture. Its audience is that of collectors, custom aesthetes, and riders who prefer emotion to performance. In this respect, the Forty-Eight 115th Anniversary is a success. It offers a unique sensory experience, where sound, style, and history take precedence over the technical specifications. But you must accept its limitations: an engine that has not evolved much, a minimalist equipment, and a price that justifies exclusivity more than technology. For purists, it may be exactly what they are looking for.
