Overview
You know what authenticity is? It's this Harley-Davidson XL 1200 Sportster Forty Eight, a machine that makes no compromises on its character. It doesn't sell you a dream of performance or technology; it offers you a raw experience, a return to the roots of American motorcycling. Imagine it parked in front of a bar, its 7.9-liter peanut tank, a design directly inspired by 1948, giving it that immediately recognizable and timeless look. This isn't a motorcycle for those seeking versatility; it's a desirable object for the purist, the one who accepts concessions for the silhouette.

Its engine, the 1200 cm3 Evolution V-Twin, is the soul of the machine. With 75 horsepower and 103 Nm of torque delivered fairly low down, it doesn't promise speed thrills; a top speed of 170 km/h is already a feat. The strength here is in the sensation, in that characteristic pulsation transmitted by the steel frame. The five-speed gearbox and final belt drive complete this simple and robust mechanical picture. But this simplicity comes at a price, literally: at over 10,000 euros, we are in a segment where the competition, particularly Japanese, often offers more for less. Harley is selling an icon here, not a rational product.
The bobber philosophy is evident at first glance. Everything is black, or almost. The frame, the engine, the 16-inch spoked wheels, the low handlebars. Only a few chrome elements, such as the exhaust pipes, contrast this dark dominance. The solo seat at 710 mm in height and the ultra-short rear fender confirm the minimalist approach. It's a single-seat motorcycle, selfish, designed for the rider alone. The suspension is basic, with a 39 mm telescopic fork at the front and two lateral rear shock absorbers, designed for the city and secondary roads, not for attacking a corner with a load. The braking, with a single disc at the front and rear, is sufficient for its use, but would not be up to the task on a more sporty machine.
So, who is the audience for this Forty-Eight? It's the urban rider who wants a presence, a defined vintage style without having to modify a base. It's also the beginner attracted by the Harley image, but be warned: its weight of 260 kg all full and its somewhat clumsy handling require a certain level of mastery. Compared to an 883 Iron Sportster, it offers more punch but retains the same stripped-down philosophy. It positions itself as a raw and stylish alternative to more modern and often more user-friendly Japanese customs.
In summary, the Forty-Eight is a double-edged sword. Its style is undeniable, immediately appealing to fans of the raw Harley aesthetic. The sensation of its engine, its available torque, create a unique connection. But its limitations are also glaring: ridiculous range with its small tank, driving very oriented towards looks rather than comfort or performance, and a high price for what is, technically, a fairly simple machine. It is not made for travel or for the track. It is made to be shown off, to live a particular sensory experience, and for those who accept these limitations as an integral part of the charm.
