Overview
Motorcycle: Harley-Davidson XG 750 Street (2019)

Does a Harley-Davidson manufactured in India and water-cooled still deserve its eagle on the tank? The question has haunted the community since the arrival of the XG 750 Street, a motorcycle that shook the fundamentals of Milwaukee. Launched in 2014, this rogue opened a breach in the traditional fortress, offering access to the brand for less than €8,000. Its Revolution X engine, a 60° V-twin of 749 cm3, breaks with the legendary 45° air-cooled engine. With 58 horsepower and nearly 60 Nm of torque, it targets urban agility more than brute power, a philosophy confirmed by a contained weight of 233 kilos in running order.
On the road, the Street proves to be a surprise. Forget the leisurely ride, here we are dealing with a lively motorcycle, designed for tight bends and slalom maneuvers between cars. The seat height of 720 mm offers immediate confidence, even for smaller builds. The braking, with its two 300 mm discs, is effective without being violent, and the belt drive ensures a welcome suppleness. But this small liquid block, while avoiding overheating at traffic lights, sorely lacks sonic personality. The V60° doesn't have the growl of the big twin, its purring is almost too refined for a Harley. Faced with a competitor like the Yamaha XV950, the Street loses out on character, but gains in pure maneuverability.
The real debate lies elsewhere. The Harley-Davidson XG 750 Street, and its more aggressive version the Street Rod, were not intended for seasoned adventurers. Their target was clear: neo-bikers, urban dwellers seeking an authentic style without mechanical complexity. The steel trellis frame, the lateral shock absorbers, and the streamlined aesthetics borrow the codes, but with an assumed modernity. For those looking for a first custom motorcycle with a prestigious badge, it was a relevant proposition. For the purists, it was a betrayal. Production, which lasted until 2020, never really won over the heart of the historical base, preferring more ancestral models like the Sportster.
Today, looking at photos of the Harley-Davidson XG 750 Street 2015 or the 2019 model, we are looking at a motorcycle apart in the history of the manufacturer. It dared to use liquid cooling, outsourced manufacturing, and an aggressive price positioning. It wasn't perfect: its 13-liter tank limited range, and some finishes betrayed its entry-level price. But it proved one thing: Harley could innovate outside of its comfort zone. Its legacy? To have paved the way for more recent, more versatile models, and to have offered, for a decade, a less intimidating sesame to Milwaukee. A bold experience, ultimately too far ahead of its time.
