Overview
Can a Harley-Davidson really bite into the asphalt like a Japanese roadster? With the XG 750 Street Rod, the Milwaukee manufacturer has clearly decided to believe it. This 2018 machine, and its younger brother from 2019, is not simply a cosmetic variation of the Street 750. It’s a courageous attempt to transform the entry-level model into a more ferocious urban roadster, better able to compete in tight alleyways. It’s far from the V-Rod, of course, but the message is clear: Harley wants to seduce a younger clientele, eager for agility and responsiveness, without denying its DNA.

The transformation begins under the hood. The 60° V-twin, pompously named “High Output,” has undergone a serious overhaul. Thanks to a compression ratio increased to 12:1 and wider intake butterflies, it now delivers 71 horsepower at 9000 rpm, 13 more than the standard Street. Torque climbs to 65.7 Nm. The figures won't intimidate an MT-09, certainly, but for a Harley, it’s a significant step forward. The engine breathes better, revs more willingly, and gives this Street Rod a liveliness that was sorely lacking in its little sister. It’s the very heart of the proposition: a mechanical unit finally a bit wild.
But the real revolution lies elsewhere, in the chassis. Harley has seriously reworked the geometry. The rake angle goes from 32 to 27 degrees, the wheelbase is shortened, and the seat height rises to 765 mm. The result? The motorcycle gains in nervousness and precision. The big gamble is the adoption of an inverted 43 mm fork, a first on an entry-level machine from the brand. Paired with a 300 mm front double disc and 17-inch rims shod with more modern tires, it offers radically new handling and braking sensations for a Harley. We’re not yet at the level of Japanese roadsters, but the gap is narrowing.
However, the Harley-Davidson XG 750 Street Rod does not deny its “urban explorer” side. Its look is more aggressive, with its screen, its prominent air filter, and its suspension with red springs. The flat handlebar and rear-set foot controls encourage a more engaged riding position. But with a weight of 238 kg fully fueled and a fuel tank of only 13 liters, it remains clearly a machine for the city and its surroundings. A rider seeking real sporting performance would prefer a Triumph Street Triple. On the other hand, for a young motorcyclist or an urban dweller wanting a unique style with a bit more bite, it suddenly becomes credible.
However, the subject must be addressed frankly. In 2019, a recall concerned certain Harley-Davidson Street 750 and Street Rod 750 for a corrosion problem on the front brake caliper. An episode that recalls that reliability is not always historically a strong point of the brand. At 8490 euros at the time, it positioned itself as an atypical alternative. Its true success may have been to prove that Harley could, when it wanted to, shake up its codes to create an urban roadster with character. Not perfect, but finally alive.
