Overview

Has Harley-Davidson finally managed to force its way into the 21st century? In 2005, the VRSCA V-Rod, or simply the V-Rod for those in the know, was a real thunderclap in Milwaukee’s serene sky. Here, there’s no traditional air-cooled twin with copper braids, but an engine that smells of German technology, the result of a surprising and audacious collaboration with Porsche. This 1131 cm3 V2, named Revolution, is a revolution in itself: liquid cooling, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder. Terms that were almost blasphemous in Harley’s catechism at the time. As a result, a liberated power of 115 horsepower is unleashed, a figure that makes the big Twin Cam engines of the time pale and propels this custom to unprecedented performance levels for the brand, with a top speed approaching 210 km/h.

Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod

But this Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod, despite having the heart of a sportbike, boasts the soul and silhouette of a customized dragster. The machine is long, low, squat, with this faux aluminum tank embracing the oversized engine. It imposes its muscular and refined style, a blend of brute power and industrial elegance that leaves no one indifferent. The full wheels, sparkling chrome, and this flowing line make it a rolling sculpture. For the rider, the position is engaged, almost sporty for a custom, with the feet relatively far back and the hands on a low handlebar. When stopped, with its 66 cm seat height, it is accessible, but once in motion, its 171 cm wheelbase is felt in tight turns.

On the road, the character is twofold. The engine, supple and torquey, delivers its 105 Nm with surprising progressiveness, but you have to rev it up beyond 6000 rpm to awaken its full fury. The sound, more muted and technical than the usual rumble, will confuse purists. The chassis, with its 49 mm fork and dual shock absorbers, offers a much more rigid handling than a Fat Boy, but the weight of 284 kg fully fueled remains an adversary in slow maneuvers. The only drawback is the autonomy, with a fuel tank of only 14 liters that often reminds you of its presence. Compared to a Japanese Cruiser like a Yamaha V-Max of the era, the V-Rod relies on style and a more civilized engine, but it lacks its raw savagery.

Ultimately, who is it for? Certainly not the national rally rider or the devotee of traditional rumbling. The V-Rod is the custom bike for the modern globetrotter who wants to combine an exceptional look with real performance, without completely sacrificing comfort. It is a machine of aesthetics and technology, a brilliant middle finger to conventions that opened a breach in the Harley universe. Its price, nearly 20,000 euros at the time, made it an exclusive object of desire. Today, it remains a cult model, proof that Harley knew, for a time, how to take risks and seduce a new audience. A mechanical boldness that we sometimes regret not seeing again.
