Overview
So, has Harley-Davidson finally discovered water? The 2004 release of the VRSCA V-Rod had the effect of an earthquake in the very closed microcosm of custom bikes. Here, in Milwaukee, we venerate air and oil, not coolant. Yet, this beast houses an engine that resembles a betrayal: a V2 signed by Porsche, water-cooled, with double overhead cams and four valves. Named "Revolution," this 1131 cm³ block is a slap in the face to tradition. Its 115 horsepower at 8500 rpm pulverizes the offer of the time, where a large Twin Cam 1450 struggles to reach 65. The torque, however, is more civilized, with 105 Nm arriving high, at 6600 rpm. We are at the opposite end of the usual low-speed growls. This Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod was clearly designed for those who found the other models too tame, too slow, too… predictable.

Visually, it's a dragster that met a jeweler. The wheelbase of 1.71 meters, the 66 cm seat height, and these full wheels give it an aggressive, ground-hugging stance. The faux aluminum tank, the sparkling chrome, and this massive engine that dominates the tubular steel frame are imposing without complex. But this beauty has weight, and not a little of it: 284 kg fully fueled. At a standstill, it's a sculpture. In motion, it becomes another story.
Because let's admit it, riding this V-Rod is an exercise in contradictions. The 49 mm fork and the two lateral shock absorbers offer correct comfort, but the 141 mm ground clearance quickly reminds you of its limits in tight corners. You cheerfully scrape the footpegs, and its 18.9 liters of gasoline are felt high in the back. The five-speed gearbox is precise, the belt transmission silent, but the braking, with its single disc at the rear, lacks bite for such a heavy and potentially lively machine. Its announced top speed of 210 km/h is credible, but it's in the brisk accelerations that this Porsche engine reveals its modern and fierce character.
Who is this atypical Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod for? Certainly not the touring rider seeking peaceful miles, nor the purist attached to the dramatic sound of the classic twin. Its audience is the aesthetes who want a custom without compromise on raw performance, the urban dwellers seduced by its concept-car look, and those who are looking for a Harley capable of surprising on a winding road. At nearly 20,000 euros at the time, it was a bold gamble.
The V-Rod remains an oddity in the brand's history. It has proven that Harley could innovate radically, drawing on Porsche to create an engine of formidable efficiency. It has not replaced the traditional models, and that's a very good thing. It exists as a symbol, a brilliant and slightly crazy technological parenthesis, for those who believe that a custom can also have the hot blood of a sportbike.
