Overview

How dare Harley-Davidson? In 2002, Milwaukee dropped a bombshell into the hushed world of customs with the VRSCA V-Rod, a machine that made purists grind their teeth. Here, no large air-cooled twin sputtering its torque at idle. Instead, a superbike heart was grafted on, a liquid-cooled V2 with dual ACT and four valves, developed with Porsche. This 1130 cm3 Revolution engine delivers 115 horsepower at 8250 rpm, a monumental slap in the face to the Twin Cam models of the range at the time. It’s on a different register, more nervous, higher in the revs, and that’s exactly what makes its charm and its break.

Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod

The result is a customized dragster aesthetic, long, low, and muscular. This Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod has an aggressive stance, with its aluminum faux tank, spoked wheels, and this massive engine that occupies the space. At a standstill, it fascinates, even the uninitiated. But once in the saddle, the compromise appears. The 14-liter tank is ridiculous for a touring bike, and the weight of 284 kg when fully fueled is felt in tight corners. The ground clearance of 142 mm invites moderation in the lean angle, under penalty of scraping chrome. It’s a machine for straight lines and wide curves, where its torque of 88 Nm, available fairly high, at 6300 rpm, allows for brisk acceleration.

Faced with the competition, such as the Yamaha V-Max of the time or Japanese cruisers, the V-Rod offers a unique character. It doesn’t have the bestial brutality of the Max, nor the touring comfort of a Honda VTX. It carves its path as a civilized dragster, with careful finishing and a sound that remains very Harley, despite the imported technology. It’s a motorcycle for those who want a custom, but refuse traditional folklore. For the rider who embraces the showy side and the practical limitations, for eye-catching urban rides or rallies.

Ultimately, this Harley-Davidson V-Rod marked history by proving that the brand could innovate radically. It remains a coveted and controversial object, a mechanical piece apart in the Harley galaxy. A stroke of marketing and technical genius, but not a motorcycle for everyday use or all wallets. It is aimed at the aesthete who accepts its quirks for the privilege of riding an icon.
