Overview
It has often been criticized that Harley-Davidson rested on its laurels, re-hashing the same tired V-Twin for decades. So, when the firm from Milwaukee released the VRSCA V-Rod in 2006, it was as if the conservative grandfather suddenly started listening to heavy metal. The first slap in the face is the engine. An 1130 cm3 named "Revolution," designed with Porsche, liquid-cooled, with dual ACT and four valves. A heresy for purists, a technological revolution for others. It delivers 115 horsepower at 8500 rpm, sending the Twin Cam engines of the time, barely exceeding sixty horsepower, flying. This Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod has a dragster soul, and it makes sure you know it.

However, once in the saddle, the beast reveals a more nuanced character than it appears. The riding position is typical custom, low, with a fairly close handlebar, but the engine vibrates little and the torque, frank from mid-range, makes the driving accessible and relaxed. It's far from the brutality of a true sportbike, but also from the laziness of a Softail. It’s a motorcycle that devours straight lines with a serene authority, its V2 blowing a raw and modern melody. With its 282 kg fully fueled, it’s not a featherweight, but its low center of gravity makes it surprisingly maneuverable in the city for what it is. On the other hand, forget rides of more than 200 km without seeing a gas station: the 14-liter tank, sacrificed to aesthetics, is a real weak point for a touring bike.
Because the real subject is aesthetics. The V-Rod isn't a Harley; it's a statement. A dragster custom with long, low, and muscular lines, where the immense engine is the star. The full wheels, the faux aluminum brushed tank, the sparkling chrome, everything is there to provoke admiration, even among the uninitiated. It doesn't go unnoticed. But this sculptural beauty comes at a price, both literally and figuratively: nearly 20,000 euros at the time, and limited comfort due to somewhat short suspension and a ridiculous ground clearance of 127 mm that scrapes the pavement on the first slightly committed turn.
Who is this motorcycle for? Certainly not the touring rider in search of kilometers or the beginner intimidated by its weight. The Harley-Davidson V-Rod seduced a new generation of riders, those attracted by the Harley myth but turned off by the archaic technology. It's a machine for those who want a custom with modern mechanics, capable of honest performance (more than 200 km/h top speed) without having the soul of a track bike. It remains an oddity in the lineup, proof that Milwaukee could innovate when it wanted to. A stroke of genius, isolated but which permanently marked people's minds.
