Overview

So here it is, Harley-Davidson is releasing a little nocturnal animal that gently shakes up its own traditions. The days are gone when the entry-level models were simply large, gruff, and archaic V-twins. With this Nightster Special, the Milwaukee manufacturer is wading into the 21st century, and that's good news. Here we have a 975 cm3 Revolution Max engine, liquid-cooled, with its 4 valves per cylinder and variable valve timing, delivering 89 horsepower and 9.8 Nm of torque. Figures that perfectly match the A2 license requirements, but above all, mark the death knell of the old pushrod Sportster. The revolution is underway, and it's liquid-cooled.

Harley-Davidson RH 975 S Nightster Special

The "Special" in its name is justified by equipment that elevates this base. We find cruise control, a 4-inch TFT screen compatible with Bluetooth, a tire pressure monitoring system, and even a USB port. This is serious equipment for a roadster meant to hunt in the dark. But the real change is in the cockpit. Harley has raised the handlebar by five centimeters and pushed it back by two and a half. The result? A much more relaxed, almost cool, riding position that contrasts with the standard Nightster’s sporty stance. You’re no longer leaning over the tank, you’re settled on it. It’s comfortable, it allows you to carry a passenger for a ride, but don't mistake it for a long-distance machine with its mere 11.7-liter fuel tank.

On the road, this 60° V-twin is a pleasant surprise. It’s lively, responsive, and its generous torque arrives early, making acceleration genuinely playful. Forget the pachydermic balance shafts of the large twins; here, we have agility. The chassis, with its lightweight tubular frame and 41mm Showa fork, performs well, even if the single rear shock quickly shows its limits on a very winding course. Braking, with a 320mm radial disc at the front, is effective without being brutal. It’s an accessible motorcycle that forgives and encourages playing with its torque curve.

Harley-Davidson RH 975 S Nightster Special

Who is it for? Clearly, a new audience. The traditional Harley rider, attached to the retro style and characteristic sound, may raise a perplexed eyebrow. On the other hand, the young rider who wants a first large displacement motorcycle with a distinctive look, or the urban traveler seeking a distinctive and technological roadster, will find their account here. At nearly €14,000, the price stings a bit, especially compared to Japanese or European competitors who are often more performant for less money. But you’re also paying for the aura, the unique style, and this desire for modernity.

Ultimately, this Harley-Davidson Nightster Special is a transitional machine. It doesn't have the raw grit of a Sportster, nor the intimidating aura of a Softail. It forges its own path, modern, equipped, and easy to live with. It proves that the brand can evolve without denying itself. It’s not the most powerful, nor the most radical, but it’s perhaps the most intelligent and best suited to its time in the current catalog. A beautiful introduction to seduce those who didn't dare to walk through the dealership door.
