Overview

So, has Harley-Davidson finally turned the page? It seems so. The Nightster, and its dressed-up version, the RH 975 S Nightster Special, are tangible proof of this. The air-cooled cylinder heads that smelled of hot oil and the past are a thing of the past. Here, we're talking about a 60° V-twin, the Revolution Max 975T, directly derived from the Pan-America adventurer. A modern engine, liquid-cooled and with variable valve timing, delivering 89 horsepower and 9.7 mkg of torque. Figures that, ironically, flirt with those of the former, vigorous XR 1200, but with a much more refined and accessible character. This is the new-formula entry-level model, and it doesn't joke around.

Harley-Davidson RH 975 S Nightster Special

The Nightster Special distinguishes itself from the base model with a few clever adjustments that change everything. They simply raised the handlebar by five centimeters and pushed it back by two and a half. Result? A more upright riding position, less leaned over on the tank, which transforms the motorcycle from a somewhat tense custom into a relaxed urban roadster machine. You go from an attitude of conquest to an almost mocking nonchalance. And then there’s this two-person seat, almost a formality, which allows you to take a companion for a nocturnal ride. Don’t see this as a desire for grand touring, it’s for charm, not for a marathon.

Where the Special justifies its higher price is in its equipment. It features a speed regulator, a USB port, and above all a 4-inch TFT screen compatible with Bluetooth. A porthole borrowed from the Sportster 1250 S that allows you to manage navigation via your smartphone. Add to that the TPMS system to monitor tire pressure, and you have a Harley that finally speaks the language of the present century. The frame, for its part, remains identical to the standard model: a minimalist steel frame, a 41mm Showa fork, and single-disc braking front and rear, sufficient for the 225 kg when fully fueled.

Harley-Davidson RH 975 S Nightster Special

So, who is this machine for? Clearly for the neo-customizer who is looking for Harley aesthetics without the archaic mechanics. For the urban traveler who wants a touch of modernity and connectivity. With its three riding modes, traction control and ABS, it is incredibly accessible, especially in A2 version. But at 16,000 euros, it places itself in a much more elevated and technical yard than the Sportsters of yesteryear. It doesn’t have the scrappy charm of an Iron 883, it’s more sensible, more technological.

The Nightster Special is a transitional motorcycle. It proves that Harley-Davidson can evolve, offer a modern engine and relevant equipment. It is much more than an accessory, it is an honest roadster, even if its 11.7-liter tank and its look remain rooted in a certain heritage. It doesn’t vibrate the same nostalgic chord, but it opens a door to a future where the mythical V-Twin might well have to share the stage.
