Overview

Can Harley-Davidson really create a modern entry-level motorcycle that retains its spirit? The RH 975 S Nightster Special seems to be their answer, an attempt to break with the past without losing its soul. We're talking about a 60° V-twin, called Revolution Max 975T, which produces 89 horsepower and 95 Nm of torque. This liquid-cooled engine with variable valve timing is a complete departure from the old Sportster with iron heads. The figures almost recall the old XR 1200, but the character is different: more supple, more accessible, and framed by electronic aids such as three riding modes, ABS and traction control.

Harley-Davidson RH 975 S Nightster Special

The Special version stands out with a few ergonomic adjustments that change everything. A repositioned handlebar, higher and further back, transforms the riding position. The standard Nightster invites you to lean forward, while the Special offers a more upright, almost nonchalant position, to dominate the road rather than fight it. They also added a two-person seat, but don't be fooled: it's for a nocturnal escapade, not for long-distance touring. The 11.7-liter fuel tank, hidden under the seat, and the weight of 225 kg fully fueled indicate that this machine is made for urban rides or winding roads, not for long journeys.

The equipment marks a clear progression. A 4-inch TFT screen, cruise control, a USB port and a TPMS system come standard, giving this Harley a technological veneer that was sorely lacking in the previous entry-level model. Specific rims and full LED lighting complete the picture. But the heart remains identical to the standard Nightster: the same minimalist frame, the same 41 mm Showa fork, the same single rear shock absorber and braking with a single disc per wheel – 320 mm at the front, 260 mm at the rear.

Harley-Davidson RH 975 S Nightster Special

At €17,990, the Nightster Special positions itself in an ambiguous territory. It is much more expensive than the Sportster of yesteryear, and less traditional, which may deter purists. But for a young rider or someone wanting a modern, A2-licensable Harley with real character, it becomes a credible option. It doesn't seek to be an aggressive little brother like the old Iron 883; it offers instead a quiet sophistication, a machine capable of trembling without requiring a constant battle. Harley-Davidson is attempting here to conquer a new audience, those who want the emblem but refuse archaic mechanics. The Nightster Special is not a revolution, but a necessary evolution, and perhaps a sign of a new doctrine for the Milwaukee brand.
