Overview
The Nightster is back. It has only been absent for a year, but it seems its place is within the lineup, not just in memories. Speaking of which, the original Nightster first appeared in 2007. Designed around the Sportster 1200 cm³ powered by the excellent 1200 cm³ V-twin XL Evolution engine mounted on silent blocks, it refreshed the Sportster lineup, which then comprised the 883 cm³ and 1200 cm³ models, by offering a vintage roadster, deliciously streamlined, thanks to a few well-considered aesthetic touches.
Priced at launch at under €10,000 for its solid black color scheme (it also existed in a two-tone, black-gray version), the Nightster unsurprisingly received the endorsement of bikers and motorcyclists of all kinds who saw in it an authentic motorcycle, splendid by origin, but also very easy to personalize and which offered its share of raw mechanical sensations, as one imagines on a Harley.
Some fifteen years later, Harley-Davidson is bringing this name, which has marked the minds, out of its hat to expand its lineup. Thus, the Nightster now joins the Sportster 1250, which appeared last year: inaugurating a completely new liquid-cooled V-twin, this model signaled the end in 2021 of the original Sportster lineage, which had been powered by an air-cooled V-twin since its birth in 1957.
The Nightster thus incorporates the engine architecture of its big sister, except for the detail that the Revolution Max 1250T becomes the Revolution Max 975T (T signifying Torque, in English). Thus, the Milwaukee water-cooled engine sees its displacement decrease from 1250 cm³ to 975 cm³, or 275 cm³ less. Opened at 60°, this V-twin now has dimensions that change from 105 mm bore and 72.3 mm stroke on the 1252 cm³ to 97 x 66 mm on this new 975 cm³. It still retains its variable valve timing system (on the intake side only), dubbed VVT. The balance shaft is also still present, as is the Velocity intake and dual overhead camshaft distribution. Boasting a compression ratio of 12:1, this bicylinder develops 89 hp at 7,500 rpm for a torque of 95 Nm at 5,750 rpm.
Although new, this 975 cm³ V-twin had already been seen on the HD 975 Bronx. Initially programmed for 2020, this project was aborted. This roadster, which was much more sporty in its definition, then announced a power of 115 hp for the same mechanical block. By reducing the power to 90 hp, Harley is returning to a definition more in line with the traditional custom clientele. Thanks to this contained power, the American firm also and especially has the possibility of offering a version compatible with the A2 license, by reducing the horsepower by half to comply with the 47 hp maximum imposed by current regulations.
Nevertheless, if we compare the mechanical characteristics of the current Nightster with those of the version launched in 2007, one can guess that the 975T will surely offer a slightly more refined behavior than its predecessor; even though the old Nightster was already equipped with injection, which was generalized on all Sportsters in 2007 as well. The first clue is that the 1200 cm³ air twin was an over-square engine (the bore being greater than the stroke, 88.9 x 96.8 mm), which induced a squat character, favoring low-rev pulling power over rapid climbs in the rev range. The 2022 Nightster, on the other hand, has an engine with square dimensions, meaning that the bore is greater than the stroke, thus favoring engine speed increases.
On the other hand, thanks to its superior displacement, the old Nightster offered 10.50 mkg from 3000 rpm, against 9.7 mkg at 5,750 rpm today on the 2022 model, or 0.8 mkg less, 2,750 rpm later. The new kid on the block is taking revenge on the power front, since with its 89 hp at 7,500 rpm, it outdoes its predecessor by offering 14 hp more, since the latter developed 75 hp at… 6,000 rpm. That said, it would not be surprising if at the same engine speed, at 6,000 rpm for example, the power of these two machines were close. To be verified… In any case, on a modern motorcycle, modern engine behavior. The Revolution Max 1250T having managed to impose its charms, we are legitimately entitled to hope that its 975T version will be just as enthusiastic.
An engine which is also used as a main and structural element of the chassis. A choice that allows to reduce the weight of the machine while offering the necessary rigidity for a healthy handling. The rear part of the frame is made of aluminum while the swingarm is made of rectangular section steel tubes. For the suspension, the Nightster receives a pair of conventional rear shock absorbers with a 76.2 mm stroke and a 41 mm Showa fork at the front with a stroke of 114mm. Braking is entrusted to simple front and rear discs, respectively 320 mm and 260 mm in diameter, pinched by 4-piston calipers at the front and a single-piston caliper at the rear. All signed Brembo. It is of course equipped with ABS, but this new kid on the block is also equipped with traction control (TCS) as well as residual torque control (DSCS).
Perfectly in line with its time, this modern Sportster offers its rider three riding modes: Road, Sport or Rain. All displayed on a small LCD screen located at the bottom of the large round speedometer that takes place on the headlamp mounting. Note that the fuel cap - this being of a capacity of 11.7 liters - is located under the saddle, itself mounted on a hinge and held by a cable. Which is much more practical than having to remove it, and then not knowing where to put it without damaging it during refueling, and ending up struggling to engage it correctly. This arrangement of the fuel tank also offers some advantages, starting with the centralization of masses, the fuel tank hiding the airbox in the end, which participates in the optimization of the Revolution Max twin's intake.
This Nightster should also seduce by its ease of handling. Starting with its low seat height announced at 705 mm when empty and at 688 mm with the rider seated on it. Which should make it accessible to all leg lengths. It should also benefit from the contained dimensions (original mounting: Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series Bias Blackwall) in 100/90 x 19 at the front and in 150/80 x 16 at the rear to offer a nice maneuverability. Finally, its final transmission by belt will contribute to the smoothness – and the cleanliness - of the whole.
In terms of looks, the Nightster takes up the style of its predecessor in a successful way. With its small headlight fairing, its vintage and streamlined line, we find the atmosphere of the original Nightster. Above all, it manages to really distinguish itself from the Sportster 1250 S, whose look of muscular and modern roadster plays a much more muscular partition. And even if we will still regret that the aseptic appearance of the liquid-cooled cylinders does not have the charm and elegance of the old air blocks Harley, it must be recognized that with this Nightster, Harley offers a successful reinterpretation of its old Sportsters. Certainly, the Sportster that many were waiting for.
Shame that the price has not also been calibrated on that of the extremely well-placed Nightster of 2007 which was under the €10,000 bar... Since 2023, the bike has been slightly streamlined: its headlight fairing and the badges on the cylinder head covers have disappeared.
