Overview
As a sign of a reevaluated doctrine at Harley, the entry-level model is no longer achieved with 1950s-era mechanics (the memory of the Ironhead in the 883 and 1200 Sportster). Today, it’s 21st-century mechanics, with multiple valves, liquid cooling, and variable valve timing offered as the entry point to the catalog. The motorcycle welcoming it is not there to joke but to tremble; it is called the Nightster.
More modern than the Sportsters of yesteryear, it cannot however boast the same success. Less traditional, considerably more expensive, not really a “small-time player” like the Iron, it must discover and conquer an entire territory. To make a little more room for itself, it hunts in the night with a companion: the Special. A more richly equipped version, with a more assertive rider ergonomics.
It only took changing the handlebar risers and modifying the position of the handlebar (5 cm higher and 2.5 cm rearward) to convert the riding attitude. When the Nightster asks you to grab the front, the Special rather proposes to mock the road. But not alone. A passenger can take place, with the addition of a saddle… Almost auxiliary. It will do fine for a night or an escapade under the charm but don’t believe in any touring promises.
Fortunately, that’s not all. The Nightster Special can also highlight its new rims, the standard TPMS tire pressure monitoring system, a cruise control, a USB port, and a more technological TFT screen. Apparently borrowed from the Sportster 1250 S, this 4-inch porthole gives all the necessary information and can be paired with a smartphone via Bluetooth. This allows you to manage your calls or install a navigation system via the H-D app.
The Nightster also features an engine derived from that of the Pan-America. Revised in displacement and power, this “Revolution Max 975T” twin is far from the brand’s heavy artillery. It clearly brings freshness with its square dimensions, a very correct compression ratio, 89 horsepower at 7500 rpm, and 9.7 mkg at 5750 rpm. Values almost identical to the former and sporty XR 1200… with a very different character.
And riding assistance that its ancestor could not even imagine. The RH 975 is equipped with three Riding Modes (Road, Sport, and Rain), ABS, traction control, and a residual torque control system, to “digest” the return of rear wheel power in case of sudden deceleration.
Engine and chassis do not differ in any way between the Nightster and the Nightster Special. Nor does the 11.7-liter tank under the saddle with a hidden filling orifice, the brakes with a single disc per wheel - 320 and 240 mm, the all-LED lighting, the minimalist frame, the Showa fork, or the two rear shock absorbers. From one to the other, the riding position changes but the machine remains the same.
The 975 Nightster Special is more different than special. It is better equipped, less selfish, more inclined to defend itself at night. Like its brother, it is A2 compatible.
