Overview
Are you looking for a motorcycle that speaks before it moves, a silhouette that captures attention before you even turn the key? Then cast your eyes on the 2009 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob. This isn't a vehicle, it's a statement. Its double round headlight set in a massive nacelle, its 130-profile front tire, and its 49 mm black fork create a brutish face. This is far from gentle curves; everything here is square, muscular, almost hostile. Harley took the bobber spirit, born in post-war garages, and injected it with steroids to create this beast of the Dyna range. Don’t confuse it with the Fat Boy, which is more laid-back and perched on a Softail frame. The Fat Bob, on the other hand, has something to prove.

And to move it forward, there's the inevitable Twin Cam 96 of 1584 cm3. With 76 horsepower, the figures don't rattle the leaves of Japanese roads, but it's a mistake to judge this engine by its technical specifications. Its purpose is this monstrous torque of 126 Nm, available from 3500 rpm. You don’t need to rev it; you open the throttle and the V-twin pushes you in the back with sovereign authority. The symphony is ensured by the short Tommy Gun-style double exhaust, a deep and percussive rumble that is the true soundtrack of the ride. The six-speed gearbox is precise for a Harley, and the belt drive adds to the mechanical silence and cleanliness of the whole.
But let's be honest, you don't choose a Fat Bob to carve up mountain curves. With a dry weight of 305 kg, probably 320 once the 19-liter tank is full, it displays a significant mass. The geometry and the wide front tire are not there to facilitate quick changes of direction. It enters the corner heavily and requires anticipation. The suspension, quite basic, is designed for straight lines and minor imperfections. It's a machine made for long, straight roads, urban boulevards where its attitude can be fully expressed. The braking, with its two front discs, is correct without being sporty, sufficient to control the mass.
Who is it for then? Certainly not the novice or the rider seeking pure performance. At 15595 euros at the time, it clearly targeted the Harley enthusiast, someone who seeks less a means of transport than an extension of their personality. The target audience is long-distance riders who prioritize sensation over pure speed, those for whom style is an integral part of the riding experience. It's a motorcycle for those who fully embrace the choice of an American, with its assumed flaws and unique qualities. It doesn't flatter the stopwatch, it flatters the ego. It doesn't promise lightness, but it offers in return an absolute road presence and that visceral rumble that makes you smile at every traffic light. The Fat Bob is not a compromise motorcycle. It is exactly what it shows: brute, authentic, and terribly charismatic.
