Overview

Qui dit "Fat Boy" immediately evokes Arnold Schwarzenegger and the endless road of Terminator 2. This iconic image, forged in cinema, still clings to the skin of this custom, but the reality of the motorcycle has evolved considerably since the 90s. Consider this 2014 version, equipped with the famous Twin Cam 103 of 1690 cm3. We are talking about an engine that doesn't shine with its raw figures – 78 horsepower, which is modest – but that delivers its sledgehammer argument at only 3250 rpm: a torque of 131.4 Newton-meters, a rotating mass that pulls you by the arms from the first crank turns. This is the very essence of the Harley engine, a slow and deep propulsion rather than a rush to high revs.

Harley-Davidson FLSTF Softail Fat Boy

This V2 powers a silhouette that remains timeless. The Softail’s faux rigid frame, the massive spoked wheels, the 200 mm wide rear tire, and this low and wide handlebar create an undeniable physical presence. With a weight announced at 330 kg fully fueled and a seat at 690 mm, it also imposes a certain stateliness. Maneuvering on foot requires a little muscle, but this low seat is reassuring when stopped. On the road, the behavior has been seriously refined since the first generations. The rear suspension, hidden under the engine, and the 41 mm fork better filter imperfections without sacrificing the "hardtail" look. The brakes, with a disc and a four-piston caliper at the front, are finally worthy of the mass to be controlled, even if we remain far from the precision of a European radial system.

Riding is a particular experience. The engine, with its balancing shaft, vibrates but not excessively, and this reserve of torque available at all times makes acceleration smooth and authoritative, without needing to play with the six-speed gearbox. The wide handlebar offers a certain comfort for the arms, but it also dictates its law: the turning angles are limited, and the wide footpegs quickly scrape the ground if you are too enthusiastic in corners. This Fat Boy is not a motorcycle for chasing apexes; it is made to swallow miles of straight roads or winding roads with a majestic nonchalance. It is a cruiser for those who want the ultimate Harley image, the feeling of power at low rpm, and ergonomics that favor travel over sportiness.

At a price that flirted with 21,000 euros at the time, it positioned itself in the high end of the Softail range. Alternatives were then found, such as the Moto Guzzi California or the Honda VT1300CX, often more affordable and sometimes more agile, but they did not carry this historical baggage and this iconic status. The 2014 Fat Boy is therefore for the traveler who seeks less absolute performance than authenticity and the sensation of a purebred American custom. It is heavy, not very agile, and its power figures make sports riders smile, but it offers a character and a presence that very few motorcycles can equal. It is a motorcycle culture object as much as a means of transport.
