Overview
It’s impossible to pass a Harley-Davidson Road King Custom without turning your head. In 2006, the Milwaukee firm decided to refine its grand tourer, removing its monumental windshield to give it a more relaxed style, almost beach-cruiser. One can easily imagine this machine gliding along coastal roads, feet resting on the forward footpegs, hands spread wide on this wide handlebar that invites leisurely cruising. The small chrome wind deflector is there for symbolism, but it will hardly protect against the elements. It’s a motorcycle for sunny days, when you want to feel the wind and hear the characteristic rumble of the Twin Cam 88 1442 cc engine.

This engine, mounted on rubber isolators, delivers a modest power of 71 horsepower, but its true treasure is its torque of 116.6 Nm, available from 3500 rpm. It propels this 341 kg mass with a quiet authority, without excessive vibration, offering a sensation of continuous propulsion rather than explosive performance. The belt drive and five-speed gearbox are smooth, typical of the brand. On the road, comfort is present thanks to a low seat at 663 mm and suspension that correctly absorbs imperfections. But it is comfort oriented towards the solo rider; the passenger will have to settle for a more austere place, and the leather saddlebags, beautiful to the eye, are too narrow to accommodate a full-face helmet. They serve more for style than for practical travel.
Handling is a relative surprise. Despite its wheelbase of over 1.6 meters and its considerable weight, the Road King Custom moves with a certain ease in a straight line and in moderate-speed turns. But the moment the dream cracks arrives during low-speed maneuvers or U-turns. This wide handlebar then becomes a handicap, often requiring the use of the full width of a road or resorting to an empty parking lot. You have to make peace with physics, and accept that this motorcycle will never be as agile as a sportbike. Braking follows the same logic: the rear is effective and precise, while the front disc requires a firm and decisive pressure from the right hand to obtain a surprise-free stop.
At a price of 21,400 euros at the time, this Harley positioned itself as a luxury cruiser for the purist style enthusiast, prioritizing aesthetics and sensation over quantified performance. It does not seek to compete with lighter and more responsive Japanese cruisers, nor with more versatile European touring bikes. Its audience is those who want to live the Harley experience, with its bright chrome, its deep sound, and its nonchalant attitude. For long journeys, the standard Road King with its large windshield was more suitable. This Custom, on the other hand, is made for stylish getaways, where the goal is not to arrive quickly, but to arrive while turning heads. It is a motorcycle that demands a particular philosophy from its rider: to accept its technical limitations to fully savor its unique and iconic character.
