Overview
Do you remember that era, in the mid-2000s, when Harley-Davidson seemed to want to seduce custom purists while still keeping a foot in touring? The FLHRSI Road King Custom is precisely the result of this equation. It takes the imposing and comfortable base of the Road King, removes its monumental windscreen, and attaches a ridiculously low seat at 66 centimeters. The result is a motorcycle that plays on two fronts, with varying degrees of success.

Sitting on this seat almost scraping the asphalt, feet forward, you initially feel like you're in the perfect posture of a California cruiser. The twin cam 88 with a 1450 cm3 displacement, mounted on silent blocks, rumbles with that particular sonic signature, delivering its 109 Nm of torque from 3400 rpm. That's where the beast reigns: in suppleness, in waves of propulsion, grazing the kilometers of coastal roads without ever forcing. The small chrome wind deflector does a minimal job, but the whole is rocked by a suspension comfort that, in a straight line, almost makes you forget the advertised 348 kg. It's pleasant to cruise, undeniably, and the beautiful leather saddlebags add that touch of authenticity that makes your mouth water.
But this displayed lightness is a deception. As soon as it's a matter of maneuvering at low speed or negotiating a tight turn, the weight reminds you with the subtlety of a steamroller. The wide handlebar becomes an enemy in U-turns, often requiring the help of your foot or the search for a generous roundabout. Caution is advised. And while the low seat facilitates confidence for a beginner or a touring rider seeking relaxation, it comes at a price: the leg position, not far enough back, can become uncomfortable on bumpy roads, and the passenger is clearly the fifth wheel. Forget the idea of storing a helmet in these elegant saddlebags; their style takes precedence over their utility.
Faced with the competition of the time, such as certain Honda VTX or Yamaha Road Star models, the Road King Custom relies on the aura and style of Harley. It's not the most powerful with its 71 horsepower, nor the most agile. It runs on emotion, image, and that feeling of piloting a piece of America. For the touring rider who prioritizes relaxed travel over pure performance, and who accepts its limitations in exchange for its character, it can be an endearing companion. For others, those seeking true versatility or more vivid sensations, it is likely to quickly feel its limits. It's a motorcycle of mood, not of reason.
