The 2019 Harley-Davidson Road King Special FLHRXS embodies that promise with a boldness that its siblings in the lineup, the standard FLHR and the Classic, don't dare embrace. Where one plays it understated and the other cultivates nostalgia, the Special chooses the dark side. Everything is black. Engine guards, mirrors, exhaust shields, fork, Mini-Ape handlebars — chrome has been banished from nearly everywhere, save for the cooling fins and a few details on the cylinder heads. The result is a machine that commands respect before you even turn the key.

Beneath that dark suit beats the Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-twin, packing 1868 cc of American engineering. Compared to the 107 that equipped previous model years, the 123 cc gain translates into 120.1 lb-ft of torque available from just 3000 rpm. This Special is aimed at experienced riders — those who know how to handle a heavyweight with finesse and who seek a road presence that few machines can deliver.
