Who, in 2023, still dares offer a 366 kg motorcycle with no fairing, a 1,868 cc V-twin, and a price flirting with 30,000 euros? Harley-Davidson, obviously. The Road King Special FLHRXS makes no apologies. It owns every kilo, every cubic centimeter, every dollar of its 29,390-euro price tag. And that's precisely what makes it fascinating for those seeking travel in its rawest, most stripped-down form within Milwaukee's Touring lineup.

The Special recipe comes down to one word: black. Harley has plunged this Road King into a bath of darkness. Engine guards, controls, mirrors, turn signals, covers, exhaust, heat shields, fork, Mini-Ape handlebar — everything gets the treatment. Chrome survives only on a few cooling fins and the pushrod tubes, like a last gasp from the old school. The 19-inch front and 18-inch rear Prodigy wheels replace the former 16-inchers and give the whole package a tauter, more modern silhouette. The seat, set at 695 mm, keeps both feet planted flat on the ground. That's no small detail when you're managing 351 kg dry weight at a red light.
Beneath that dark skin beats the Milwaukee-Eight 114, a 45-degree V-twin displacing 1,868 cc and fitted with four valves per cylinder. The numbers speak for themselves: 93 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and, more importantly, 157.9 Nm of torque available from just 3,250 rpm. This is not a motorcycle you rev to the redline. It's an engine that pushes hard, low, with quiet authority. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox handle the rest. You ride, you devour miles, you let the V-twin set the pace. Top speed caps out at 160 km/h, which clearly defines the machine: it's built to cruise, not to sprint.

Don't be fooled by its mechanical dinosaur appearance. Since the 2020 model year, the Road King Special packs the Reflex RDRS suite, an electronic arsenal that would nearly put some European touring bikes to shame. Multi-mode traction control, lean-angle-sensitive linked ABS, drag-torque slip control, hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring. It's all there, hidden beneath bodywork that swears by tradition alone. The steel double-cradle frame rides on a 49 mm telescopic hydraulic fork with 117 mm of travel and twin rear emulsion shocks. It's adequate without being generous, especially for a machine of this size. The braking system, with its twin 300 mm front discs and a single rear disc, does the job without particular brilliance.

Against an Indian Springfield Dark Horse or a BMW R 18 B, the Road King Special plays a different tune. Less sophisticated than the German, less flashy than the Indian, it banks on a kind of mechanical honesty. Its 22.7-liter tank provides decent range for long hauls. Its hard saddlebags swallow the essentials without turning the bike into an ocean liner. It's aimed at patient road warriors, those who prefer the deep rumble of a V-twin to the whine of an inline-four. Not a beginner's motorcycle, not a track toy. A machine of conviction, one that demands anticipation, respect, and a certain taste for unapologetic unhurriedness.
