Overview
Nearly 390 kilos on the scales, a 1,868 cc V-twin delivering 162.8 Nm of torque from just 3,000 rpm, and a shark-nose fairing honed in a wind tunnel. The 2020 Road Glide Special doesn't do things by halves. At Harley-Davidson, the "Special" tag is never just a marketing badge slapped on a tank. It's a promise of constant evolution, a motorcycle that refuses to sit still from one year to the next. And this one keeps its word.

The Milwaukee Eight 114, with its four valves per cylinder and 102 mm bore, replaced the 107 without ceremony starting in 2019. The gain is beyond dispute: torque jumps from 150 to nearly 163 Nm, a surplus you feel with every roll-on, every overtake on a two-lane highway. The claimed 89 horsepower looks modest on paper next to a Gold Wing or a BMW K 1600, but that overlooks the philosophy of the 45-degree V-twin. This engine doesn't chase revs. You ride on a cushion of low- and mid-range torque, the belt drive swallowing miles in a silence that older Harleys never knew. The six-speed gearbox does its job without drawing attention to itself, which is the finest compliment you can pay it.
On the chassis side, the steel double-cradle frame absorbs the mass with stoicism. The 49 mm Showa fork and the twin rear shocks, with 117 mm and 55 mm of travel respectively, deliver decent filtering for a liner of this scale. Nobody's talking sportiness here — the conversation is about long-distance comfort. The seat, perched at just 695 mm, makes low-speed maneuvering easier at a standstill, a detail that matters when you're wrestling a machine this hefty through a gas-station parking lot. The 22.7-liter tank provides reasonable range without turning every fill-up into an accounting exercise. The brakes prove up to the task with three 300 mm discs and four-piston calipers. More importantly, the 2020 model year brings lean-angle-sensitive ABS and linked braking that modulates pressure between front and rear depending on the situation. For a Touring bike of this size, it's a welcome safety net.

The RDRS electronic platform also packs a two-mode traction control system — dry and rain — an anti-hopping clutch to prevent rear-wheel chatter on downshifts, a hill-start assist, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. This is a far cry from the stripped-down cruiser image. The Boom Box GTS, with its 6.5-inch color TFT screen, integrates GPS, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and voice recognition. The H-D Connect system, new for 2020, links the motorcycle to the owner's smartphone to remotely monitor location, fuel level, and battery status. One year of subscription included, then roughly 14 euros per month. The Shark Nose fairing, refined through wind-tunnel testing, channels airflow via a triple vent that equalizes pressure on both sides of the windshield. The result is measured in reduced fatigue after 500 kilometers of highway riding.

At 29,390 euros in a standard color, the 2020 Road Glide Special targets committed road warriors who want to devour tarmac with no compromise on equipment or presence. It will never rival a K 1600 GT in agility or a Gold Wing in mechanical refinement. But it offers something neither of those two can: that dark commanding stance, that V-twin rumble at a red light, that way of owning the road like no other machine. The Prodigy wheels, the near-total disappearance of chrome in favor of black, the stretched saddlebags tapering toward the rear — everything contributes to a radical look for a Touring bike. It's massive, it's expensive, it's more technologically accomplished than ever. And that's exactly what its devotees ask of it.
