Overview

Who still buys a 387 kg bagger for over €32,000 in 2023? The same enthusiasts who know that no BMW R 1250 RT or Gold Wing delivers that feeling of riding a piece of America. The 2023 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special FLTRXS doesn't try to please everyone. It's built for committed tourers, the kind who devour back roads the way others sip bourbon — slowly and with conviction. Its 45° V-twin displacing 1868 cc, the Milwaukee Eight 114, produces 93 hp at 5,250 rpm. A modest figure on paper, almost laughable next to the 160 hp of a Pan America. But this Road Glide doesn't play the horsepower game. It plays the torque card: 158 Nm available from just 3,250 rpm, a tidal wave of force that propels the machine effortlessly regardless of which of the six gears is engaged. The switch to the 114 engine, which replaced the 107 from 2019 onward, breathed new life into this ocean liner. The 387 kg wet weight is nearly forgotten once you're cruising on the highway, the belt drive filtering out jolts with a smoothness that chains will never match.

The "Special" suffix isn't just a catalog talking point. Since 2018, this trim has cultivated a dark, almost menacing look. Prodigy wheels in 19 and 18 inches, saddlebags stretched downward to slim the silhouette, methodical elimination of chrome in favor of black. The 2021 model year, however, opened a door: chrome options now allow a shift from the sinister register to something more classic. Exhausts, handlebars, engine covers, footpegs — everything can be customized piece by piece. The Bar & Shield badge sits proudly on the flanks of the 22.7-liter tank, whose filler cap migrated to the right to free up the center console. A detail, sure. But on a Harley, details make the difference between a motorcycle and an object of worship.

On the chassis side, the tubular steel double-cradle frame revolutionizes nothing, and that's by design. The 49 mm telehydraulic fork offers 117 mm of travel up front, while the twin rear shocks make do with 55 mm. Far from adventure bike standards, but the Road Glide Special has no pretense of attacking mountain passes. Its seat set at 695 mm inspires confidence at a standstill, even for shorter riders. Braking, on the other hand, makes no compromises: three 300 mm discs clamped by four-piston calipers, all overseen by cornering ABS. The RDRS electronic platform adds two-mode traction control, a slipper function for aggressive downshifts, a hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. For a Harley, that's a technology package rivaling what the best European GTs have to offer.

The cockpit deserves a closer look. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen of the Boom Box GTS centralizes GPS, Bluetooth, intercom, Apple CarPlay, and music playback at 25 watts per channel. The H-D Connect system links the bike to a smartphone via the cellular network: location, range, fuel level, and alerts for suspicious movement. The service is complimentary for the first year, then billed at roughly €14 per month. The Shark Nose fairing, refined in the wind tunnel, integrates a triple vent that stabilizes air pressure around the windshield. The result is an aerodynamic comfort bubble that few tourers can match. Daymaker LED headlights complete the picture with a wide, powerful light signature markedly superior to the previous generation.

At €32,190, the 2023 Road Glide Special FLTRXS squares off against the Indian Challenger and, to a lesser extent, the BMW K 1600. It will never be the fastest with its 170 km/h top speed, nor the most agile with its barge-like dimensions. But it possesses what its competitors struggle to replicate: a presence, a character, a unique way of turning every kilometer into a ritual. For the rider who seeks the road rather than performance, it remains a proposition without equal.
