Overview
At the dawn of the 2000s, asking the question was almost blasphemy. A Ducati, really, to cover hundreds of kilometers without pain and with luggage? For the keepers of the temple, accustomed to the wail of the 916, the very idea of a touring machine bordered on heresy. Yet, with the ST2, Bologna took on the challenge without denying its soul. This is far from a simple sporty bike dressed up. The engineers designed a specific model, with a redesigned trellis frame and understatedly elegant fairing, fully embracing its sport-GT vocation. This Ducati ST2, particularly the 2001 models, proves that you can leave the circuits without betraying its genes.

The heart of the machine is a famous 944 cm3 L-twin cylinder, water-cooled and animated by desmodromic valve actuation. With 83 horsepower at 8500 rpm and a torque of 85 Nm available relatively early, this ST2 engine doesn’t have the rage of a Testastretta. But that’s precisely its strength. It is supple, willing, and delivers its power with a progressivity that makes long journeys restful. The deep sound and responsive throttle response remind you that you are indeed on an Italian bike, even though the technical specifications of the 1997 to 2003 models show constant evolution. For those seeking a motorcycle with an authentic character without extreme nervousness, this engine is a significant argument.
In the saddle, the position is a successful compromise. The seat height of 820 mm is accessible, and the comfort, both of the seat and the suspension, is generous for the time. The ST2 swallows departmental roads with surprising ease, carried by solid handling and Brembo brakes that, while requiring a bit more finesse than on a Japanese bike, have effective bite. With its 23-liter tank, the range is correct, and the original luggage cases, well integrated, complete the transformation of this Ducati into a true traveler. But be warned, the aerodynamic protection remains minimalist, a point to consider for long highway journeys.
So, who rides this used Ducati ST2 today? It will appeal to the demanding globetrotter who wants character without the drawbacks of a pure sporty bike, or the enthusiast seeking a unique base for modifications, or even a transformation into a café racer with a dedicated kit. You must approach its purchase with your eyes open. The reliability of the Ducati ST2 of this generation is generally good, but certain points such as the clutch or the battery require particular attention. On the used market, facing often more aseptic Japanese competitors, it offers a unique sensory experience. It is not the most versatile or the easiest machine, but it is one of the most charismatic in its category. It proves that adventure can also begin on a country road, to the sound of a twin that pulses.
