Overview
Your thing is to explore on rolling trails? And you love the Ducati Scrambler? Then the Desert Sled is made for you. Not intimidated by thick undergrowth, the back roads of the Larzac, or the dawn of a Californian desert, this machine wants to capture those moments of dust that you love to express during evening drinks.
The "enduro" Scrambler received an anti-slip seat in 2021, along with a 'Sparking Blue' color scheme. The red frame is gone, but gold rims are added.
Improvements have been part of the program since 2019. None change its missions; Ducati simply takes the opportunity to upgrade a series of elements. The engine has been blackened and then milled on the cooling fins. The evolution of the décor is the only aesthetic change. It's more substantial technically. Like all "phase II" Scramblers, it is equipped with a hydraulic clutch command and adjustable levers. The dashboard now displays a fuel gauge and the engaged gear. Discreetly but useful at the right moment, the on-board electronics reinforces the effectiveness of ABS with the Cornering system, modulating the force according to the angle. We also note the presence of an "Off-road" riding mode deactivating ABS, automatic retracting turn signals, a DRL light signature, more ergonomic switches, and the Ducati multimedia system. You will be able to connect your smartphone, your playlists, and your calls with the Scrambler.
Trails, a few rocks, a little dirt on your jeans (reinforced), tougher aluminum for the tank panels, and optimized comfort. The Desert Sled boasts a new seat and revised suspension settings. On the scale, the 800 Scrambler of the mountains and dunes gains two kilos in weight. Negligible. In any case, nothing to change what it does, what it likes. A motorcycle inspired by American machines from the 60s-70s, those that hummed off-road under the California sun.
The Scrambler adopts the attire of this spirit and adapts its skills to playful outings with friends and rocks. For this purpose, the frame is reinforced compared to other members of the family, the swingarm is modified, and the suspensions enhance the terrain approach. The Kayaba components develop a 200 mm stroke at the front and rear. This Scrambler benefits from increased ground clearance and a higher seat, perched at 860 mm from the ground.
Of course, spoked rims are a must. 19 inches at the front and 17 at the rear, with tires adequate for touring, Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR. Regarding braking, there is what is needed with a 330 mm disc complemented by a 4-piston Brembo M4.32 radial caliper at the front. Behind, we find a 245 mm with one piston.
A small change on the engine side since 2020. The small block is validated Euro5, without losing its capabilities. Like the other Scramblers, the Desert Sled relies on the 73 horsepower of the 803 cm3 twin. Fun, available, and playful, the Italian block adds to the charm of this little adventurer. A calibration of the injection brought a little more smoothness in operation some time ago. As with all models in the family, a good dose of accessories will allow you to enhance this machine ready for quite a few rural eccentricities. Watch out for inflation though. The Desert Sled is catching up in price with the BMW F 850 GS. Charm versus performance - food for thought.
