Overview
Do you remember that era, around 2014, when the mid-size trail bike market was a real battlefield? Everyone wanted a piece of the pie, between the showroom Dakar and the roadster dressed up as an adventurer. In this melee, Triumph unleashed its trump card with the Tiger 800 XC, and to give it a little more flair, they produced this Special Edition. It's not a technical revolution, far from it, but rather a stroke of the brush to seduce the eye. They drowned the beast in a deep, almost funereal black, which hides Diablo Red Mat reflections when the light hits it. It's quite a spectacle, a play of colors that turns heads in the parking lot, even if underneath the paint, it's still the same solid steel trellis frame doing the job.

The mechanics, on the other hand, don't need embellishment. This 800 cc three-cylinder engine is a pure marvel of character, a real engine that sings at all altitudes. With its 95 horsepower at 9300 rpm and its torque of 79.4 Nm, it has the margin to swallow the highway without stress, while still retaining a liveliness that makes dirt roads very accessible. Yes, but be careful, with its 215 kg fully fueled and this 84.5 cm seat height, it takes a certain commitment to handle it in soft terrain. It's not a lightweight, it's a serious touring tool. The cycle parts are tailored for the job: an inverted 45 mm fork offering 220 mm of travel, a single shock absorber at the rear, and these 21 and 17-inch spoke rims that inspire confidence when the tarmac disappears. The brakes, with their two 308 mm discs at the front, have a firm bite, assisted by a welcome ABS that can be switched off for dirt outings.
Who is the customer of this Special Edition? Clearly, the globetrotter who wants to distinguish himself from the pack of BMW F 800 GS or Yamaha XT 1200Z Super Ténéré, which are more massive. The Tiger 800 XC SE is the British compromise: more civilized and grumpy than a Japanese bike, less austere than a German one. Its 19-liter tank promises beautiful ranges, and its upright riding position is a comfortable armchair for covering distances. But at over 11,000 euros at the time, the price made a few teeth grind for what was essentially an aesthetic option. You were buying Triumph style, the exclusivity of the color, and that assurance of having a machine capable of doing everything correctly, without being the best in a particular discipline.
Ultimately, this special edition sums up the philosophy of the Hinckley brand: to offer emotion and character, sometimes at the expense of radicalism. It's a touring motorcycle with an adventurous spirit, dressed for the evening. It doesn't revolutionize the genre, but it brings that touch of British madness that is so often lacking in the competition. A heart choice for those who want to travel with panache, accepting to carry its 215 kilos with elegance.
