Overview

Can a Ducati be simple, accessible, and indulge in not having the soul of a missile? The Scrambler 800 Icon 2023 answers yes, but with the demands of a Bolognese brand unwilling to betray its heritage. This new generation, often called Next-Gen, is not an aesthetic revolution. It’s more a serious technical update, a polish on a formula that has been captivating since its return in 2015. The goal? To maintain that relaxed look of a universal motorcycle, but with the tools of a contemporary machine.

Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon

The heart remains the 803 cc Desmodue L-twin, an engine that has forged the identity of the range. For 2023, it delivers 73 horsepower at 8250 rpm, a notable gain compared to the 67 hp of the first generation. Torque, 65.7 Nm at 7000 rpm, ensures crisp acceleration without being brutal. Coupled with a general weight reduction, this evolution makes the bike more lively. The wet weight is announced at 185 kg, a respectable figure for a machine of this displacement. The crucial arrival is the Ride by Wire throttle. It opens the door to two riding modes, Road and Rain, and the Ducati Traction Control. For a motorcycle presented as "simple," this is a significant step towards modernity. One can debate its necessity on a Scrambler, but it’s an argument against competitors like the BMW F 900 R or the Honda CB650R, which also play the card of accessible electronics.

The chassis has been extensively reworked. A steel trellis frame, a slightly extended wheelbase, a new swingarm, and a centralized shock replace the previous architecture. KYB suspension, an inverted 41 mm fork, and a single adjustable shock offer 150 mm of travel. This is sufficient to absorb road imperfections, but it’s far from a true off-road machine. The Scrambler 800 Icon is a roadster dressed in casual wear, a point to keep in mind. The braking system, with its single 330 mm Brembo front disc and radial 4-piston caliper, is excellent and oversized for the specifications. The 18-inch front wheel and wide 180/55 rear tire recall the scrambler style, but the geometry is geared towards the road. This motorcycle is made for the city, departmental roads, and stylish rides, not for rocky trails.

The design remains faithful to the original spirit, with its round headlight marked by an LED X and its 13.5-liter steel fuel tank. A seat height of 795 mm guarantees wide accessibility. The real novelty is the 4.3-inch color TFT dashboard, which is connectable and modernizes the interface without complicating it. Ducati also plays the card of easy personalization. The side panels and the top of the tank are interchangeable, allowing you to change the color without paint. The accessory catalog is immense, ranging from Akrapovič exhausts to carbon fiber elements, to transform your Icon into a café racer or a more exclusive machine. This is where the base price, €10,990, can quickly skyrocket.

Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon

In conclusion, the Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon 2023 is a cleverly positioned machine. It is aimed at the motorcyclist who wants a daily Ducati, less intimidating than a Panigale, with a style that makes sense. It is not the most powerful in its power class, nor the lightest, but it offers a unique blend of Desmodue character, recognizable style, and very successful urban/road versatility. It’s an excellent motorcycle for a second bike, for a return to motorcycling after a few years, or for those seeking easy personalization. The Dark versions, with their matte black finish, or the Full Throttle and Nightshift editions, offer variations in style on this same solid and finally modernized technical base.
