Overview
Who would have bet on a comeback for the Ducati Scrambler? In 2015, the Bologna-based manufacturer resurrected a legendary name from the sixties, but this time with an 803 cm3 L-twin engine. Far from the high-powered monsters that populate the catalog, this 800 Icon aims for something else: simple pleasure and accessibility. With its 75 horsepower and a featherweight dry weight of 186 kg, it positions itself as the antithesis of overpowered sportbikes. It's a motorcycle to relax on, to rediscover the smile on the handlebars without feeling like you're taming a race beast. The target audience? Those who may have perhaps a little forgotten why they started riding motorcycles.

The design, however, is a hit. It’s a clever blend of retro and modernity, avoiding the pitfall of pastiche. The fuel tank reprises the iconic shape of its ancestors, the brushed aluminum engine covers add a touch of quality, and the round headlight with its four-arc light signature is immediately recognizable. It has that friendly appeal that makes you want to approach it, unlike a Panigale which intimidates. But don't be fooled: beneath the relaxed appearance, the technology is serious. The trellis frame, the 41 mm inverted fork, and the radial Brembo braking system with its single 330 mm disc at the front prove that Ducati has not skimped. This single disc, often criticized, is actually more than sufficient for this light and agile motorcycle.
The engine, derived from the former Monster 796, is the cornerstone of the character. This 2-valve desmo L-twin, air and oil-cooled, delivers its 67.7 Nm of torque with a generosity that flatters the rider without ever scaring them. It doesn’t have the ferocity of a modern 4-valve engine, but it has charm, a responsive feel, and a deep sound that contributes to the pleasure. On the road, the Scrambler 800 Icon behaves like a true roadster, agile in the city thanks to its 790 mm seat height, stable on the road. The 150 mm suspension travel and the block-pattern tires even allow it to venture onto a dirt path, more for the gesture than for real off-road riding. That's the whole point of it: it suggests escape without demanding absolute performance.

So, who is it for in 2023? Faced with competitors like the Triumph Street Twin or the Moto Guzzi V7, Ducati is playing the premium image card and a distinctive Italian character. Its price, which started at 8590 euros upon release, places it in the higher end of the range. That’s the downside of the armor: you pay for the famous red badge. But for many, it’s precisely the dream ticket into the Ducati universe, without the complexity and maintenance cost of the high-end models. Whether you’re looking for a used Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon, a darker Dark version, or you are seeking accessories like an Akrapovič exhaust or carbon fiber parts to personalize it, the offer is vast. It remains a safe bet, a motorcycle that doesn’t take itself too seriously but is seriously well-made. A cocktail of fun and coolness that hasn’t really aged.
