Overview
The Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon arrived in 2015 like a breath of fresh air, and five years later, it has been updated to meet Euro 5 standards without losing its soul. This is a tricky exercise that many fail, but the Bologna-based manufacturer has come out on top. The secret? Not touching what’s essential. The 803 cm³ L-twin engine retains its 73 horsepower and 67.7 Nm of torque, figures that don’t shake the technical specifications but perfectly match the relaxed spirit of the machine. This engine, inherited from the Monster 796, remains a treat in terms of character, with its loping idle and a punch in the back at mid-range speeds. The real change is under the electronic hood: a new Bosch ABS control unit, more intelligent, which modulates braking in corners. A subtle but valuable evolution.

Visually, the 2020 model plays the card of subtle refreshment. It takes a keen eye to spot the new muffler trim, the reinforced tank sides, the machined rims, or the black treatment on the engine block. The headlight is now fully LED, with a cross signature that is now characteristic. The ergonomics gain maturity: the seat is slightly thicker and higher (798 mm), the suspension settings are optimized for comfort, and the clutch becomes hydraulic. The dashboard is enriched with a fuel gauge and a gear indicator, welcome additions for everyday users. In terms of personalization, the Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon accessory universe is extensive, ranging from simple carbon covers to café racer kits, not forgetting Akrapovič exhausts for those who want to make the L-Twin sing.
Facing competitors such as the Triumph Street Scrambler or the Yamaha XSR700, the Ducati sticks to its territory: an assumed retro style and a premium positioning. Its trellis frame, single shock absorber, and 41 mm inverted fork give it a technical look that partly justifies its price, around €9,550 in 2020. For a recent version like the Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon 2023, a significant surcharge is to be expected. Fortunately, the used market is full of good deals, with 2015 to 2019 models often well maintained. The weight has slightly increased with the new regulations, displaying 189 kg fully fueled, but the bike remains agile and fun.

So, who is this modern icon for? Clearly not for the track enthusiast seeking lap times, nor for the touring rider who devours the kilometers. The Scrambler targets the stylish urban dweller and the Sunday pleasure rider, the one who prioritizes a smile over the speedometer. Its 13.5-liter tank and behavior on paved roads make it an ideal companion for impromptu getaways. It’s a motorcycle that doesn’t take itself seriously, but is seriously well finished. The 2020 evolution is therefore a discreet and effective update, proving that it is possible to respect Euro 5 without stifling the pleasure. A test ride on a Ducati Scrambler 800 Icon is enough to understand it: sometimes, progress is simply knowing not to change too much a winning formula.
