Overview
Who would have bet that Ducati, a brand accustomed to circuits and winding roads, would be seduced by the call of sand and gravel paths? Yet, with the Scrambler 800 Desert Sled, the adventurous spirit of American motorcycles from the seventies has indeed returned, this time dressed in Italian technical rigor. It’s not a motorcycle for crossing the Sahara, but it possesses this insolent ability to make you leave the pavement without fear, simply for pleasure.

The transformation is real. Beneath its lines reminiscent of vintage scramblers, the Desert Sled, in its 2017 to 2020 versions, has been profoundly reworked for off-road use. The tubular frame is reinforced, the swingarm modified, and above all, it receives an inverted Kayaba fork of 46 mm with a 200 mm stroke, a serious figure for a motorcycle in this category. The seat height rises to 860 mm, which requires a certain stature, but offers ground clearance. The weight? At 207 kg fully fueled, it’s not a feather, but its mass is well contained by the geometry.
The engine is the faithful 803 cm3 L-twin, delivering 73 horsepower and a torque of 67.7 Nm. It is lively, its character remains intact despite Euro4 homologation, and it finds here an ideal terrain for expression: one is not seeking pure speed, but availability and sensations. The six-speed gearbox and final chain transmission are obvious choices for the intended use. The braking system, with its 330 mm front disc and four-piston radial Brembo caliper, is effective and inspires confidence, even when the pavement turns to gravel.
Compared to a Triumph Scrambler 1200, more powerful and sophisticated, or even a Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin, more adventure-oriented, the Ducati Scrambler 800 Desert sled occupies a very personal niche. It is less a machine for long journeys than a vehicle of freedom, ideal for country roads, light rallies, or simply to inject a dose of adventure into everyday life. Its 13.5-liter tank and a top speed of approximately 180 km/h are in line with this philosophy: local exploration, stylish and without complications.
Its audience? The urban dweller seeking escape, the traveler who wants to stray from straight lines, or simply a motorcycle enthusiast with a strong character. Opportunities for this model are interesting, as its robust design ensures good durability. For those who want to personalize their machine, Ducati Scrambler 800 Desert sled silencers and other accessories allow you to further refine its style. Ultimately, it’s a motorcycle that proves that the scrambler spirit is not just marketing, but a real riding proposition, halfway between the road and the field.
