Overview

Can a motorcycle be both a nostalgic object and a perfectly calibrated marketing product? Ask the Ducati Scrambler 800 Classic, and its answer will be a rumble from a L-twin engine that smells of warm oil and well-crafted business plans. Launched in 2015, this machine never really changed until its discontinuation, making each model year, from the 2016 to the 2019 Ducati Scrambler 800 Classic, a stylized clone of a dreamed-of era. The 2018 Classic version we are discussing here takes the concept the furthest: it is the most deliberately retro of the family, the one that loudly proclaims its love for the 1970s.

Ducati SCRAMBLER 800 Classic

The look doesn't lie. The "Orange Sunshine" fuel tank, striped with its black band, the spoked rims, the brown seat, and the more pronounced aluminum fenders are a bespoke vintage suit. You are far from a low-end customization; here, the detail is king and contributes to building a consistent atmosphere. But slip into the saddle, and the past quickly gives way to the present. The seat height of 79 cm is accessible, the wet weight of 186 kg remains manageable, and behind the minimalist dashboard beats a modern heart. The 803 cm3 Desmodromic twin-cylinder engine, partly inherited from the Monsters of yesteryear, delivers 73 horsepower and 67.7 Nm of torque. It remains one of the last Ducati engines with air cooling and 2 valves, a technological archaism that here becomes a charming argument, synonymous with a frank response and an authentic grainy sound.

Don't expect lightning. With a top speed approaching 180 km/h, this Scrambler is not a race machine. Its pleasure lies in its torque available from low revs, its 41 mm inverted fork that swallows imperfections without drama, and its Brembo radial braking system that inspires absolute confidence. It is comfortable in the city, relaxed on winding roads, and even capable of some excursions on dirt thanks to its Pirelli Dual Sport tires. It is a motorcycle for those seeking escape without complication, the neo-urban wanderer in search of style and simple but well-felt sensations.

However, the picture has a shadow. At 10,650 euros new at the time, the Ducati Scrambler 800 Classic charged dearly for its badge and look. Faced with competitors like the Triumph Street Scrambler, more versatile and often better finished, or the more radical and authentic BMW R nineT Scrambler, the Ducati's technical argument could seem light. Its price was the ticket to enter a select club, riding the wave of premium neo-retro.

So, stroke of genius or costly exercise in style? A bit of both. Trying the Ducati Scrambler 800 Classic is to understand that its 73 horsepower is not measured only on the dynamometer, but also on the smile it provokes. It does not claim to be the most performant, but perhaps one of the most charismatic in its category. It is aimed at the rider who places emotion and aesthetics above the technical specifications, the one for whom a mundane journey should taste like an adventure. It is not perfect, but it has a soul, and that, today, is priceless.
