Overview

The Ducati Multistrada V2 S comes seeking a bit of limelight from its larger V4 sibling, but the family remains well-structured. Family reunion, a few raised voices, a compromise on the table, and we move forward. The V4 retains its advantage with the four-cylinder engine, raw power, and a more niche clientele. The mid-range V2 becomes the guardian of the symbol, the Ducati L-twin.

Ducati Multistrada V2 S 937

It no longer wants to resemble its predecessors, as was the case in all previous generations, up to the 1260. Then the V4 arrived with its Granturismo engine. It changed its face somewhat, and its chassis considerably, when its number of cylinders doubled. The 937 cm³ engine, however, only suffers from almost imperceptible design tweaks. This is why the two Ducati trail-GTs no longer look alike except from a distance. A positive point for the V2, which will be less compared and more identifiable.

The difference is marked between displacements. Whereas it was almost nonexistent between generations. Thus, only a strip of color under the seat and a few decals allow you to distinguish the new from the old Bologna mid-size trail bike. It is on the engine side that some operations distinguish the V2 S from the 950 S. It signals a loss of 2 kg, gained on the clutch, connecting rods, and gearbox. Performance is identical, with a maximum of 113 horsepower and 9.8 mkg of torque. A bonus of this overhaul is that mid-MTS models are now available in a 35 kW version to allow riders with A2 licenses to have some fun.

They have also gained 5 kg across their entire anatomy. Part of that is on the engine, 1.7 kg on the rims, a few hundred grams on the brake disc flanges, and another handful on the mirrors. Ergonomics make an effort with a lower seat and revised saddles, more focused on comfort. The entire V2 range evolves in the same vein… The technical parts of the frame, brakes, and fairing are siblings. Except that the S draws heavily on the digital assets of the V4S. The technology transfer is almost vampirism.

The V2S scores big with electronics, which are much more comprehensive than on the standard version. It entrusts its damping to the semi-active Skyhook Evo system, acting in real time on compression, preload, and rebound settings. Enough to smooth out the road according to several moods; and according to the Riding Modes chosen (Sport / Touring / Urban / Enduro). Then there's the plethora Ducati style: adaptive cornering lights, cruise control, Up&Down shifter, keyless on-board system, 5-inch color TFT screen, backlit switches – so much technological added value to which it is appropriate to add the standard offer present on all V2s. Namely, the four Riding Modes, traction control, the 6-axis inertial platform, cornering ABS, hill-hold control, Brake Light (flashing the rear light when braking hard), and automatic retracting turn signals.

Heated grips are an option – simply scandalous given the price and positioning of the machine. Like so many others, the Bologna manufacturer encourages a visit to its additional catalog, where you will find cases, center stand, Termignoni exhaust, spoked rims, crash bars, carbon fiber parts, aluminum parts, in-house multimedia system, lowering kit, etc., etc…

The new Multistrada V2 S has improved some points of the 950 S it replaces. It allows you to appreciate a major part of Ducati's know-how in the Touring field. With reasonable power and an already seasoned price tag. V2 or V4, the S versions have a very similar approach to premium category travel. In two well-defined dimensions: 57 horsepower, 19 kilos, and a €4700 difference.
