Overview

Imagine a motor that roars like a lion in a cage too small, and a motorcycle that challenges you from the first glance. In 2007, Ducati decided not simply to refresh its Monster, but to house the heart of its Superbike within it: the 998 cm3 Testastretta V2, delivering 130 horsepower at 9500 rpm. This was not a simple update, but a transfusion of raw character. The S4R thus became the most powerful Monster ever offered, a clear proposition for those who wanted the temperament of a sportbike without the fairing.

Ducati Monster S4R Testastretta

Compared to its ultimate cousin, the S4Rs, this version makes the judicious choice of the essentials. It retains the steel trellis frame, a signature of the brand, and that magnificent single-sided swingarm which gives as much character as a three-piece suit on an athlete. The 43 mm Showa inverted fork and the Sachs shock absorber are all adjustable, offering a serious base. But it forgoes the high-end Öhlins components and carbon parts of the S4Rs. For the rider seeking the pure Ducati experience, without the burden of the prestige version’s price, it is an intelligent compromise. The difference of 2400 euros at the time was felt mainly on the bill, not necessarily on the road.

Because the soul is identical. This Testastretta engine is the centerpiece. With 103.9 Nm of torque available, it does not require high revs to show itself alive. The sound of the two stacked exhaust pipes is a deep and authoritative chant. At the time, faced with often more refined and smoother Japanese competitors, the S4R offered a roughness, a direct mechanical connection that was its charm. Its dry weight of 177 kg made it agile, and the 800 mm seat height allowed for good freedom of movement.

But this character comes at a price, beyond the entry ticket of 12595 euros. The tank of only 14 liters quickly reminds you that this machine is made for bursts, not continental crossings. And the position, typical of naked bikes of this generation, becomes a challenge on very long journeys. It is the perfect motorcycle for the sporty touring rider who spends more time on back roads than on highways, or for the dilettante track rider who wants a machine capable of serious performance, with a stated top speed of 240 km/h, without the constraints of a pure sportbike.

The Monster S4R Testastretta of 2007 remains therefore a passion object. It does not seek to be the most versatile, the most comfortable or the most technological. It is a declaration: a motorcycle that places the sensory experience, the raw pleasure of riding and the emotional connection with the mechanics above all else. It is proof that a naked bike can be more than a simple compromise, it can be the concentrate of a brand's spirit, unfiltered. For those who understand that, no compromise on the suspension seems too great.
