Overview
Do you remember the first time you saw a Monster? It wasn’t a motorcycle; it was a manifesto. A bare trellis frame, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, an engine as a soul. In 2000, the Ducati Monster 900 underwent a rejuvenation that made it almost civilized, without betraying its wild beast DNA. It was given a higher handlebar, a refined fuel tank, and, above all, electronic injection replaced the carburetors. The question then arises: has the Ducati Monster 900 IE become too tame? For carb purists, this change is heresy. For others, it's a revolution. The 904 cc Desmo twin gains suppleness and docility at low revs, delivering its 78 horsepower with less cold temperament. But don’t be fooled: this engine remains a passion animal. At 6750 rpm, its 73 Nm of torque pins you to the seat with a big, sonorous thump, a cavernous roar that defines an entire era. Reliability, often criticized in earlier models, takes a significant leap forward with this injection, making the 2000 Ducati Monster 900 IE a more serene candidate for used purchase.

The revised riding position is less radical. With a 770 mm seat height, it welcomes a wider audience, from the touring rider seeking character to the young A2-restricted license holder. But the chassis, however, has not signed an armistice. The trellis frame made of molybdenum steel and the 43 mm inverted fork offer steering precision of surgical accuracy, formidable agility for splitting traffic or attacking a corner. This precision comes at a price: a firm suspension, clearly calibrated for sporty riding rather than swallowing highways. The brakes, four-piston Brembos, are of unwavering effectiveness, offering bite that inspires absolute confidence. It's a typical Ducati compromise: comfort is sacrificed on the altar of pure pleasure. With its 200 kg fully fueled and a 16.5-liter tank, it’s not the most economical, but it’s made for rides that make your heart beat, not for Excel spreadsheets.
Ducati, as a strategist, has declined the formula to appeal to all budgets and all temperaments. The base model, the Classic, features the beautiful red and silver colors. For dark souls and light wallets, the Ducati Monster 900 Dark offers a matte black finish and minimalist equipment, an iconic version from its release in 1999. Finally, for the demanding rider, the Ducati Monster 900 S steps up a notch with an adjustable fork and an Öhlins rear shock, ready for racing or Saturday rides on winding roads. And for the irredeemable, there was always the S4 and its 916 engine. Today, finding a used Ducati Monster 900 in good condition is a treasure hunt. “Café racer” custom versions abound, as do original parts, from the Ducati Monster 900 speedometer to the famous Ducati Monster 900 clutch bell, often the source of characteristic clatter.
So, who is it for? This roadster is not a compromise motorcycle. It’s for those who accept a strong character, a living mechanical heart, and demanding maintenance, in exchange for raw sensation and a timeless image. Faced with smoother and more predictable Japanese competitors, the Monster 900 IE from 2000 demands total involvement. It doesn’t caress you; it electrifies you. It’s not nice; it’s just become a little less wild, without ever denying the madness that brought it to life in 1993. It’s this madness, precisely, that people come to seek in it.
