Overview

Do you remember the first time you saw a Monster? Not a current version, sleek and aseptic, but the original, from the 90s. The one that seemed to have been assembled from the finest parts of a sportbike, deliberately left bare. The Ducati Monster 900 from 2002 is the culmination of this brilliant idea, after a slight facelift in 2000. It was given a higher handlebar, a refined fuel tank, and above all, the major innovation for the time: fuel injection. Forget the carburetor model, the Ducati Monster 900 ie brings a significant dose of civility to the sometimes grumpy character of the Desmo twin.

Ducati Monster 900

This 904 cc twin, developing 78 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 73 Nm of torque, is more than just a pretty trellis frame. Fuel injection has given it much better flexibility, a more generous filling at mid-range. Twist the throttle, and the beast responds with a big punch, a hoarse sound and a frank thrust that sticks you to the seat. The Ducati Monster 900 has lost nothing of its soul, it has just tamed it for the city. With a seat at 800 mm, it remains accessible, even if its nervous chassis and fairly stiff suspension recall that it was born to lean sharply. For a model weighing 200 kg fully fueled, its agility remains a pure delight.

But be careful, if you are looking for a used Ducati Monster 900, you need to keep your eyes open. The reliability of the first fuel injection, the Ducati Monster 900 ie reliability, could have been capricious on some examples. Rigorous maintenance of the desmodromics is non-negotiable. And then there are the versions. The base model, understated, the Dark in its minimalist matte black trim, or the more exclusive S, with its adjustable fork and Öhlins shock absorber. Some have even turned it into a sublime Ducati Monster 900 cafe racer, proving the timelessness of its lines.

So, who is this Italian for? Clearly not for the absolute beginner, despite its reputation as an accessible roadster. Its sharp reactions, its demanding mechanics, make it the ideal mount for a rider who seeks both raw sensation and a desirable object. It can be radial, a little stiff on touring rides, and its 15-liter fuel tank imposes frequent stops. But it offers something that few competitors of the time offered: an authentic, theatrical character with every start. In the hands of a passionate rider, it remains a monument, much more than a simple vehicle.
