Overview
When a Borgo Panigale workshop worker exclaims "E un Mostro!" upon discovering the prototype of what would become the Monster 900, he doesn't yet know he's christening a lineage. Thirty years later, the Ducati Monster 821 embodies what this genealogy has produced in its most balanced form. Not the entry-level version—the 797 plays that role—nor the adrenaline cannon that the 1200 represents. The 821 is the synthesis: 821 cc, Desmo V-twin cooled by water, 109 horsepower at 9,250 rpm and 86 Nm at 7,750 rpm, all for 206 kg fully fueled. On paper, the spec sheet is well-positioned.

The Ducati Monster 821 technical specifications don’t revolutionize anything compared to the previous generation, and that’s intentional. The trellis frame anchored to the cylinder heads remains identical, a solid structural argument that avoids a classic perimeter frame. The suspension relies on a 43 mm inverted fork and a progressive-link monoshock, without a single-sided swingarm at the rear, which some will regret. The braking system, however, is without serious criticism: Brembo Monobloc M4-32 four-piston calipers on 320 mm discs at the front, with ABS as standard. This is the level expected on a motorcycle costing €11,450. The color TFT screen, the full LED headlight, and the up-down shifter as an option represent the most visible evolutions of this 2019 version. The fuel tank loses a liter, going to 16.5 L, a detail that will count on long journeys.
What makes the Ducati Monster 821 a unanimous favorite among those who have ridden it is the engine’s character. The Desmo twin pulses, growls at low rpm, and revs with a frankness that contrasts with the cottony smoothness of Japanese four-cylinder engines. The six-speed gearbox shifts cleanly, the eight-level traction control allows you to dose the risk, and the three riding modes Urban, Touring, and Sport allow you to adapt the motorcycle to your mood of the moment. For A2 license holders, the Ducati Monster 821 A2 is accessible via a restriction to 47 horsepower, which partly explains the persistent interest in this model on the used market. A Ducati Monster 821 used in good condition remains a coherent proposition for those who want to enter the naked bike world without going through a sanitized machine.
Compared to a Yamaha MT-09 or a KTM 790 Duke of the same era, the Monster 821 displays a slightly higher weight and a higher price. It doesn’t seek to beat them on their turf—brute efficiency or performance-price ratio. Its argument lies elsewhere: visual identity, sound, high and compact riding position with a 785 mm seat, accessible to various builds. It is aimed at the urban rider who wants a motorcycle that turns heads, the weekend touring rider who doesn’t need fairing, and the mechanical enthusiast who looks at Ducati Monster 821 exhausts with the immediate desire to graft a replacement silencer onto them. Ducati Monster 821 accessories—windscreen, protections, saddlebags—further form a comprehensive ecosystem that allows you to personalize the machine without tinkering in the void.
Ultimately, this 2019 version—also available as a Ducati Monster 821 Stealth with its dark finishes—represents the culmination of a development cycle. Ducati hasn’t reinvented everything; it has refined what already worked. The maximum speed of 220 km/h is not the point; the way you arrive at the first 150 is. And on that point, the Monster 821 responds with disarming honesty.
