Overview
Thirty years that Bologna has been playing with our nerves. Since the original Monster put its two wheels on European tarmac in the mid-90s, Ducati has perfected a particular art: selling desire in a gearbox. The mid-size lineage has crossed generations like a straight line on a circuit, from the original 750 to the 796, with a few stops along the way, until this 821, which marks a clear break in the family’s history.

What first strikes you in the technical specifications of the Ducati Monster 821 is the extent of the jump. Between the 796 and this 821 cc Testastretta 11° engine, Ducati didn’t simply climb one bar of the ladder; it climbed four at once. We go from 87 horsepower to 112 units developed at 9,250 rpm, with a torque of 89.4 Nm available at 7,750 rpm. To put the character in perspective: this naked bike reaches the power once displayed by the S4R powered by the 996. Purists will appreciate the reference. This liquid-cooled V-twin with four valves per cylinder meets Euro4 standards for the 2017 model year without conceding a single horsepower on the altar of pollution reduction, which was not a given.
Facing the competition, the positioning is clear. Where a Yamaha MT-09 plays the card of nervous lightness at a contained price, or a Triumph Street Triple focuses on three-cylinder refinement, the Ducati Monster 821 claims a more carnal temperament, less rational, almost affective. The steel trellis tubular frame, reduced to its simplest expression, entrusts structural rigidity to the cylinder heads themselves. This is a construction philosophy that few manufacturers still dare to defend, and Ducati draws an instantly recognizable visual identity from it. The Brembo M4-32 radial-mount calipers, the 43 mm inverted fork, the progressive-link monoshock: the chassis equipment suffers from no serious criticism at this price range.
The onboard electronics deserve attention, because this is where the Monster 821 really rubs shoulders with the best. Eight levels of traction control, three engine maps, three ABS thresholds: everything is managed from the handlebar without taking your eyes off the road. On the Ducati Monster 821 test, it is precisely this modularity that seduces demanding riders. For A2 license holders, the version restricted to 35 kW exists and opens the door to a characterful motorcycle without waiting for the restriction to be lifted. We must still name the absent. The monobrach swingarm, a historic signature of the Monster, has disappeared in favor of a double aluminum swingarm. Ducati is clearly reserving the monobraccio for its premium versions, as it has done with the Panigale. The decision can be found logical from an industrial point of view, but it can also be found disappointing for a motorcycle displayed at €11,150. This Ducati Monster 821 price places it exactly where the competition is densest, and a few trim details would have deserved more care at this price. The announced top speed of 220 km/h is consistent with the power, even if this figure is not what defines the daily use of the machine. Its dry weight of 179.5 kg, 205.5 kg fully fueled, and its 785 mm seat height make it accessible to a wide range of builds.
The Monster 821 is for those who want character without paying the price of the 1200, for the urban dweller who dreams of weekends on winding roads, for the enthusiast who is looking for an Italian motorcycle to maintain without breaking the bank. Neither an absolute beginner, nor a seasoned track rider. Someone who knows what they want, and who has understood that the best motorcycles are not justified on a spreadsheet.
