Overview
Certain motorcycles have that rare gift of remaining desirable with seemingly little effort. The Monster has possessed it for 25 years, crossing generations with the same posture: naked, muscular, built around a V-twin that makes no apologies for its existence. Within the current lineup, the Ducati Monster 821 occupies the most balanced position. The 797 serves as an entry ticket, the 1200 targets riders who want everything and immediately; the 821 sits in the middle, powerful enough to hold its own, accessible enough not to discourage.

Visually, Ducati is playing continuity rather than revolution on this 2018 version. The silhouette is etched into retinas for too long to warrant a major upheaval. A few borrowings from the Monster 1200 R are visible in the musculature of the rear fairing and in the profile of the Ducati Monster 821 exhaust. The tank loses a liter to settle at 17.5 liters, which does not significantly change the range. More notable: the dashboard switches to a color TFT screen with gear indicator and fuel gauge. The circular headlight, a visual signature of the Monster since its beginnings, is now entirely LED. The trellis frame, anchored to the cylinder head to take advantage of the block's rigidity, remains unchanged. At the rear, the wide footpeg plates disappear in favor of more discreet supports, for a visually more consistent result.
Under this frame, the desmodromic V-twin develops 109 horsepower at 9250 rpm and 86 Nm of torque at 7750 rpm. This engine constitutes the backbone of the Ducati Monster 821 since its beginnings: supple in the city, fierce on the open road, it rewards both the cautious rider and the one who likes to play with the 6-speed gearbox. This 2018 version makes the use of a bidirectional shifter possible, as an option. The electronics frame all of this without ostentation: three-level ABS, traction control with eight settings, three riding modes Urban, Touring and Sport which adjust the throttle response and the intervention threshold of the assists. Faced with a KTM 890 Duke or a Yamaha MT-09, nothing revolutionary, but a consistent and well-calibrated package for the type of riding this motorcycle calls for.
The chassis relies on a 43 mm inverted fork and a progressive-link mono shock. Four-piston Brembo M4.32 calipers bite 320 mm front discs; a 245 mm rear disc completes the assembly. This braking system is among the best in the segment, precise and durable. It’s a shame that Ducati did not equip this intermediate version with a single-sided swingarm, like on the 1200 models. With 195 kg fully fueled and a seat height of 785 mm, the Monster remains physically accessible, and its Ducati Monster 821 specification is well suited to A2 license use with the available homologated restrictor.
At a catalog price of 11,450 euros, it is positioned above an MT-09 or a Z900, but below the high-end versions of its direct competitors. Those looking for a used Ducati Monster 821 from this year will find proven mechanics, modern equipment and a reasonable value. The target audience is not the young first-time rider or the confirmed track rider; it is the rider who wants a defined character, careful Italian aesthetics and a machine exploitable on a daily basis without requiring a mechanic’s diploma to enjoy it. Every Ducati Monster 821 test leads to the same observation: this motorcycle does not seek to impress on paper, it convinces once in the saddle.
