Overview
Who would have bet, at the beginning of the 1990s, that this creation with its stripped-down insect-like look would become Ducati’s financial powerhouse? The Monster, that’s the story of a crazy gamble that paid off. In 2002, the range received a new addition, the Monster 620 ie, a version clearly targeting a wider audience, particularly A2 license holders. It replaces the previous 600, but doesn’t just get a simple facelift. Electronic fuel injection makes its debut, a first for an entry-level Monster, and the displacement increases to 618 cm3. The heart remains a 90° air-cooled V-twin, faithful to the desmodromic system, but it breathes better and gains in flexibility.

On paper, the figures are honest without being electrifying: 60 horsepower at 9500 rpm and a torque of 53 Nm well placed from 6750 rpm. But the real change lies elsewhere. Ducati drew from the ST catalog to revise the chassis. The wheelbase is lengthened, the swingarm changes, and a double 320 mm disc appears at the front. The result? The beast gains stability, losing a touch of the nervous liveliness of the first Monster, but gaining enormously in serenity. Riding becomes more accessible, more predictable. It’s a softened Monster, which will no longer frighten the novice while retaining that characteristic grimace that defines its style.
However, don’t expect the smooth sweetness of a Japanese bike. The position remains committed, leaning over the tank, and the engine delivers its torque with that typical mechanical roughness of air-cooled L-Twins. Vibrations are present, the sound is raw, it’s all the charm of the desmo. Financially, the bill is salty for the time, nearly 7900 euros, facing competition like the Suzuki SV 650, cheaper and objectively more performant. But you don’t buy a Monster 620 ie for purely rational arguments. You buy it for that aura, for that trellis frame that still makes an impression, and for the pleasure of an engine with a palpable soul.
Today, searching for a used Ducati Monster 620 is an excellent idea for those who want to experience the Bologna brand without breaking the bank. Models like the Ducati Monster 620 dark or the classic Ducati Monster 620 ie 2002 to 2004 offer an authentic entry. The reliability of this generation is correct, although it is necessary to monitor the maintenance of the desmo system. For daily use or weekend outings, it remains a companion full of character. A motorcycle that, without being the most technically advanced of its generation, has the immense merit of making the Ducati experience tangible and exciting, far beyond its simple technical specifications.
