Overview
Are you looking for an accessible road bike that doesn’t resemble a concrete block on wheels? A motorcycle with some character, capable of bringing a smile to your face in corners without breaking the bank in terms of purchase or maintenance? Turn to the Yamaha XJ6 Diversion F, and specifically to this Race Blu 2013 edition. It proves that a sensible machine can have presence.

The secret lies in this paint scheme directly borrowed from the M1 MotoGP bikes of the time, a vibrant Yamaha blue combined with matte gray plastics. On paper, it’s just a decoration. On the road, it changes everything. The blue rims, the full fairing, and this signature hue give it a presence you don’t expect in this segment. Compared to it, many competitors like the Suzuki Gladius or the ER-6n Kawasaki look cheap. Yamaha is playing the visual emotion card here, and it’s successful.
Don’t be fooled, beneath this race-inspired blue beats the pragmatic heart that made the XJ6 a success. The inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 600 cm3 delivers 76 horsepower at 10,000 rpm, a smooth and progressive power ideal for a beginner who wants to progress serenely or for a touring rider who prioritizes comfort. The torque of 59.8 Nm arrives fairly high in the rev range; you’ll need to use the gear selector, but the six-speed gearbox is precise. With a wet weight of 217 kg and a seat height of 78.5 cm, the motorcycle is reassuring and maneuverable, perfect for the city or chained departmental roads.
Where does it fall short? In its absolute lack of bite. The 41 mm telescopic fork and the single shock absorber do their job correctly, but with no feedback whatsoever. The braking, with its two 298 mm front discs, is effective but lacks bite and modulation. It’s a motorcycle designed not to surprise anyone, to be docile. The sporty tourer will prefer a Honda CBF600, stiffer, and the budding rider a Suzuki SV650, much more lively thanks to its twin-cylinder engine. The 17-liter fuel tank and the comfortable riding position make it a correct road-trip companion, but the wind can become heavy on the highway.
Ultimately, who is it for? For the demanding novice who wants a first large displacement motorcycle that is reassuring but not anonymous. For the motorcyclist on a tight budget – €7499 at the time – looking for a reliable, economical machine, and a bit more stylish than average. The XJ6 Diversion F Race Blu is the anti-grandeur madness: it doesn’t promise you MotoGP sensations, but it offers a coherent, reliable, and surprisingly elegant package. It’s an honest proposition in a world of useless over-power.
